Naville, Suzanne; Blom, Gaston E. – 1968
This presentation introduced the theory and practice of psychomotor education as developed by de Ajuriaguerra and Naville at the University of Geneva. Some overlap of their concepts and principles with perceptual motor training methods occurred in the United States, according to the authors. The focus of the theoretical discussion integrated…

Rico, Gabriele Lusser – 1976
Evidence is presented to indicate that human knowing involves both a propositional mode stressing discourse, sequence, and logic and an appositional mode characterized by metaphoric constructs, holistic relationships, and the capacity to process many variables simultaneously. Separate sections discuss our culture's heavy emphasis on propositional…

Posner, Michael I.; And Others – Science, 1988
Hypothesizes that the human brain localizes mental operations which are integrated in the performance of cognitive tasks such as reading. Provides support of this hypothesis from studies in neural imaging, mental imagery, timing, and memory. (RT)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Brain Hemisphere Functions, Cognitive Mapping, Cognitive Processes
Powers, P. J.; Putnam, Jon – 1997
This report discusses the outcomes of a study of 147 children (ages 7-10) with learning disabilities that investigated the extent to which students legally classified with learning disabilities concurrently manifested mixed lateral dominance (MLD). The study was conducted to determine if MLD was a possible predictive factor for early…

Kingma, Johannes, Ed.; Tomic, Welko, Ed. – 1997
This book contains papers that discuss the "g factor" (general intellectual capacity) in discerning intelligence and how to influence the development of intelligence. The g factor relates to the theory that individuals who do well on one mental ability test tend to do well on other mental ability tests due to an innate ability. Chapters…

Sinatra, Richard – Educational Leadership, 1983
Brain research indicates that sensory-motor experiences during childrens' preschool and early school years may be the foundation for later language development. (MLF)
Descriptors: Cerebral Dominance, Cognitive Development, Concept Formation, Developmental Stages

Daugherty, Kathryn M.; Moran, Michael F. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1982
Fifty low vision children, aged 7 to 18, assessed with the case-study method on 143 variables using the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery, Stephens Piagetian Battery of Reasoning Assessments, and Standardized achievement test were found to have significant delays in cognitive and psychomotor development and academic achievement. (Author)

Nas, Gerard – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1983
Two experiments are reported in which mismatched sounds and spelling were studied in Dutch pseudo-words used as stimuli in English lexical decision experiments. Results show mismatches in spelling or sound result in longer latencies for Dutch pseudo-words than for their nonword controls, supporting a cooperation model of lexical access. (MSE)

Wagner, Michael J.; Tilney, Germaine – TESOL Quarterly, 1983
A group of adult intensive English students, language teachers, and graduate music education students were taught a 300-word German vocabulary list in a five-week period, some with and some without Baroque music but with superlearning techniques, and some by traditional techniques. Accelerated learning by superlearning methods could not be…

Saffran, Eleanor M. – British Journal of Psychology, 1982
Discusses recent studies of aphasia from the perspective of theories of normal language structure and processing. Patterns of language breakdown are considered to reflect the componential structure of the language system. Brain damage is seen to fractionate language along lines suggested by existing psycholinguistic models. (Author)
Descriptors: Aphasia, Communication Disorders, Foreign Countries, Language Patterns

Eccles, John C. – Teachers College Record, 1981
Human beings must realize the great unknowns in the material makeup and operation of the brain, in the relationship of brain to mind, in the creative imagination, and in the uniqueness of the psyche. The essential feature of the dualist-interaction theory is that mind and body are independent entities which somehow interact. (JN)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Affective Behavior, Cognitive Processes, Concept Formation

Miller, Leon K. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1981
This study was designed to provide evidence concerning hemispheric independence in the visual modality of children and adults. Words and letters were shown either singly or in pairs. Hemispheric independence occurred more frequently among children when letters, as opposed to words, were shown. Results are discussed in terms of developmental models…

Palmer, Thelma – English Journal, 1980
Proposes that offering students activities that exercise right-brain functions (nonverbal, nonrational, spatial, and intuitive) helps students become more fully developed human beings and better writers. (RL)
Descriptors: Cerebral Dominance, Cognitive Development, Elementary Secondary Education, Humanistic Education
Gorman, Christine – Time, 2003
Presents recent research results from magnetic resonance imaging on the neurological characteristics of individuals with dyslexia. Describes how the brain is normally used in reading and how a neurological "glitch" prevents individuals with dyslexia from easily gaining access to parts of the brain responsible for analyzing and…
