Hughes, M. J. – Australian Journal of Mental Retardation, 1979
The relative ease of learning with Bliss symbols or words was investigated using four moderately retarded and four severely retarded children (ages 6 to 9 and 14 to 17, respectively) as Ss. It was found that Bliss symbols were the more easily learned and this was most evident among the severely retarded Ss. (Author/PHR)

Jonassen, David H. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1979
Of particular interest in this study exploring a number of questions related to multi-image presentation of information and acquisition of a concept--e.g., classifying plants--was whether redundancy (i.e., additional positive examples) and an opportunity to view nonexamples as well as examples would be helpful to seventh-grade students.…

Perelle, Ira B. – Journal of Psychology, 1979
In a study of attending behavior during the crossover period (12-13 years), when preferences shift from auditory to visual stimuli, females switched their preferences significantly earlier than did males. Besides biological factors, these sex differenes were attributed to differential conditioning of attitudes, reinforcement, and discrimination…

Sorce, James F. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1979
Investigates Black and White children's development of the concept of race, the visual cues each group uses to distinguish races and the relation of children's racial awareness to their residence in an integrated or segregated community. (BH)

Mostafa, Javed; Dillon, Andrew – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1996
Describes the ViewFinder interface, designed at Indiana University as a client to a database server; it supports querying based on both visual and verbal clues. Presents results of usability analysis performed on ViewFinder with 18 users. High search success rates were achieved through both types of querying means; verbal clues were used more than…

Mondloch, Catherine J.; Geldart, Sybil; Maurer, Daphne; de Schonen, Scania – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2003
Three experiments obtained same-different judgments from children and adults to trace normal development of local and global processing of hierarchical visual forms. Findings indicated that reaction time was faster on global trials than local trials; bias was stronger in children and diminished to adult levels between ages 10 and 14. Reaction time…

Yang, Lynne R.; Givon, T. – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1997
Examines the effects of simplified input in early second language (L2) acquisition of English by experimentally manipulating language input to two groups of learners and then assessing their acquisition longitudinally within a controlled laboratory setting. Findings reveal that the dual task of acquiring vocabulary and grammar does not hinder…
Descriptors: Artificial Languages, Control Groups, Grammar, Language Research

Gottfried, Gail M. – Journal of Child Language, 1997
Investigates comprehension of metaphoric compounds. The study asked children and adults to identify referents of various types of these compounds. Findings reveal that 5-year-olds outperformed 3-year-olds but performed significantly less well than adults and that 3-year-olds did not generally interpret the compounds literally. (37 references)…

Hughes, Carolyn; Copeland, Susan R.; Agran, Martin; Wehmeyer, Michael L.; Rodi, Michael S.; Presley, Judith A. – Education and Training in Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, 2002
A study examined the effects of self-monitoring on selected social and academic behaviors of four high school students with mental retardation in inclusive classes. Occurrences of self-monitoring were associated with improvement in target behaviors. In addition, teachers and classmates perceived improved performance of target behaviors when…

Bliss, Traci – Social Studies, 1990
Traces the changes in the visuals used in U.S. history textbooks since the 1900s, concentrating on contemporary texts. Provides questions educators can use in assessing the educational value of textbook visuals. Critiques current textbook visuals, and suggests ways that they enhance understanding of educational information. (RW)

Canelos, James; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1989
The effect of an imagery cue and an attention-directing strategy within the context of a microcomputer learning environment was studied using 180 Ohio State University freshmen. The environment provided both self-paced and externally paced instruction. It appears that the attention strategy and embedding of an imagery cue increased students'…

Campbell, Donald S.; And Others – American Annals of the Deaf, 1989
Sixteen impulsive hearing-impaired adolescents were trained to solve visual problems using a modified version of the "LOGO" computer language; subjects received concurrently presented self-instruction training while controls did not. On two dependent measures of impulsive problem-solving behaviors, treatment subjects demonstrated…

Lyons, Carol A. – Urban Education, 1989
The Reading Recovery Program offers individual reading lessons. Students are dismissed from the program when they reach a certain level of proficiency. A study of the errors made at entry reveals learning-disabled children rely on visual information and ignore supportive language, while other at-risk children utilize both. (VM)

Herron, Carol A.; And Others – Modern Language Journal, 1995
College students enrolled in an introductory French course viewed 12 French-language videos, with 1 group exposed to oral descriptions and pictures from the videos before viewing and a second group exposed to only oral descriptions. Students in the description-plus-pictures group demonstrated higher levels of comprehension than students in the…

Yee, Penny L.; And Others – Cognitive Psychology, 1991
Four experiments with 128 college undergraduates and 82 Air Force recruits examined the coordination of a verbal component task with a visual spatial and an auditory component task. Results show that ability to coordinate perceptual and visual information differs from ability to deal with either type of information alone. (SLD)
