Exploring Graduate Enrollment Management Competencies: A Case Study of Dental Admissions Professionals
Emily H. Rhineberger
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Marymount University
Graduate enrollment management (GEM) is a relatively new organizational concept and discipline. As an emerging profession, a common body of knowledge to structure and regulate the profession is critical to its professionalization. Identifying competencies is one method to create that knowledge and is a well-established method of measuring a nascent profession. In contrast to the more established discipline of enrollment management (EM), a similar organizational concept implemented at the undergraduate level, GEM appeared in the literature starting in the 2010s and has no published research on competencies. This qualitative instrumental case study was an exploration of GEM competencies. These competencies were explored in dentistry, an academic program in graduate education. Participants were individuals in admissions roles at U.S. dental schools with at least 1 year of experience and oversight over the admissions process in their programs. They were interviewed to determine the competencies perceived as essential for admissions professionals and their perception of the evolution of those competencies. Findings reflected four competency categories--emotional intelligence, higher education knowledge, systems and technology, and communication--and the acquisition methods perceived as essential by the participants. With emotional intelligence the most referred competency, the findings were foundational insights into GEM competencies. The present study's findings aligned with those found in EM competency lists, yet also included GEM-specific considerations such as intimate knowledge of the academic program being represented. Recommendations included increasing professional development for GEM professionals, establishing mentoring programs, extending the research in dentistry as well as in other graduate health professions, and exploring the applicability of the findings to the unpublished competency domains drafted by NAGAP, The Graduate Enrollment Management Association.
