MARKLE, SUSAN MEYER – 1961
KEY CONCEPTS, TERMS, AND TECHNIQUES IN PROGRAMED INSTRUCTION ARE PRESENTED IN THIS PROGRAMED PRIMER, WHICH BEGINS BY DEMONSTRATING THE USE OF FORMAL AND THEMATIC PROMPTS IN THE UTILIZATION OF A STUDENT'S REPERTOIRE. NEW RESPONSES ARE INTRODUCED INTO THIS REPERTOIRE BY THE USE OF COPYING FRAMES, EMPHASIS PROMPTS, AND PANELS. THE DESIGN OF SEQUENCES…

Klausmeier, Herbert J.; Frayer, Dorothy A. – 1970
A tri-level structure of cognitive operations in concept learning is proposed, based on results of controlled experimentation and factor analytic studies. Global strategies in concept attainment are hypothesized to consist of three phases: attending to the situation, searching for information, and processing and using the information. Further,…

Phillips, E. Ray – 1974
The report is a review of research results which concern sequencing (procedures for validating the hypothesized ordering of the subordinate tasks in a learning hierarchy) and practical applications of learning hierarchies in instructional design. Indirect versus direct validation procedures are examined in detail. (Author)

Mayer, Richard E. – Instructional Science, 1977
The review demonstrates that studies of the role of instructional sequencing provide an important test of the assimilation-to-schema theory, and that many apparent inconsistencies in the literature may be better understood by an analysis of the internal assimilation process. (Author)

Solan, Harold A. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1987
This study involving 38 normally achieving fourth and fifth grade children confirmed previous studies indicating that both spatial-simultaneous (in which perceived stimuli are totally available at one point in time) and verbal-successive (information is presented in serial order) cognitive processing are important in normal learning. (DB)

Butt, Norman – Special Education: Forward Trends, 1984
Daily practice for 15-20 minutes of repeating series of numbers resulted in improvement in auditory, sequential memory for five 13-year-olds with moderate learning difficulties. Subjects in the control and placebo group also demonstrated progress. Experimental Subjects demonstrated greater increases over a two-year period. (CL)

Read, Floyd M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1971
There were no differences in the understanding of physical optics and ability to solve physical optics problems after instruction or on a delayed test between students with or without prior instruction in wave motion. (AL)

Burman, Leah; And Others – Special Education: Forward Trends, 1983
An objectives approach to curriculum for special education students incorporates features of sequence including code, success criterion and assessment, age relationship, and record keeping. Such a structured approach, which uses behavioral objectives, provides for continuous assessment and promotes parent teacher cooperation. Potential problems…

Rupp, Ralph R. – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1983
Normal-hearing elementary school-age children (N=180) performed rote sequencing language tasks, named colors, and told their birthday. For the six automatic and semiautomatic expressive language tasks, maturational trends were noted for all observations. Central tendency values and standard deviations by grades for the six tasks are reported.…
