Cheung, Shu Fai; Chan, Darius K.-S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2008
In meta-analysis, it is common to have dependent effect sizes, such as several effect sizes from the same sample but measured at different times. Cheung and Chan proposed the adjusted-individual and adjusted-weighted procedures to estimate the degree of dependence and incorporate this estimate in the meta-analysis. The present study extends the…

Gorard, Stephen – Cambridge Journal of Education, 2008
This paper discusses the difficulties of establishing a clear count of UK higher education students in terms of the categories used for widening participation, such as occupational background or ethnicity. Using some of the best and most complete data available, such as the annual figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, the paper then…

Odendaal, Willem A.; Marais, Sandra; Munro, Salla; van Niekerk, Ashley – Evaluation and Program Planning, 2008
This paper reflects on a process evaluation of a home visitation programme in South Africa. The programme, implemented in two low-income communities, focused on the reduction of risks to unintentional childhood injuries. The evaluation comprised a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, including observations in conjunction with an…

Davis, Jon D.; Shih, Jeffrey C. – School Science and Mathematics, 2007
Research on student achievement within the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) and Core-Plus Mathematics Project (CPMP) at the secondary level is beginning to accumulate, however, much less is known about how prepared these students are for post-secondary education. Therefore this study involving students within one tracked…

Price, James M.; Nicewander, W. Alan – 1982
A standard interpretation of the coefficient of correlation may be obtained from the ratio of two variances. If it is assumed that two variables, X and Y, are bivariate normal and scaled to have zero means and unit variances, it can be shown that the correlation between X and Y is the ratio of two conditional means. Galton's statistical studies of…

Curry, Blair H.; And Others – 1978
Data reexamination is a critical component for any study. The complexity of the study, the time available for data base development and analysis, and the relationship of the study to educational policy-making can all increase the criticality of such reexamination. Analysis of the error levels in the National Institute of Education's Instructional…

Leckliter, Ingrid N.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1986
Reviews the factor analytic studies done on the 1981 Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) standardization sample and various patient samples. Concludes that a three-factor solution appears to provide a source of hypotheses about an individual's or a select sample's unique abilities and weaknesses worthy of further exploration.…

Overall, John E.; Hornick, Chris W. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
This article evaluates power and Type I error probabilities for a modified Fisher exact test for homogeneity of response probabilities in 2 x 2 tables. The continuity-corrected Fisher statistic is more powerful than the uncorrected Fisher exact test, while it is less often nonconservatively biased than the Pearson chi-square. (Author/RD)

Krijnen, Wim P. – Psychometrika, 1994
To assess association between rows of proximity matrices, H. de Vries (1993) introduces weighted average and row-wise average variants for Pearson's product-moment correlation, Spearman's rank correlation, and Kendall's rank correlation. For all three, the absolute value of the first variant is greater than or equal to the second. (SLD)

Byers, Bryan; Zeller, Richard A. – Omega: Journal of Death and Dying, 1991
Expands census data practice of "age heaping," rounding off individual's age to nearest digit ending in zero or five. Presents statistical data supporting "death heaping" in state vital statistics. Illustrates possibility for death date to be assigned as birth date when there may be no adequate record of the date of birth for…

Hug, Barbara; McNeill, Katherine L. – International Journal of Science Education, 2008
In this paper, we examine how students discuss and interpret data and whether these actions vary depending on the type of data they analyse. More specifically, we are interested in whether students perform differently when analysing first-hand data, which they collect themselves, compared with second-hand data provided to them. Our data analysis…

National Foundation for Educational Research, 2007
Statistical neighbour models provide one method for benchmarking progress. For each local authority (LA), these models designate a number of other LAs deemed to have similar characteristics. These designated LAs are known as statistical neighbours. Any LA may compare its performance (as measured by various indicators) against its statistical…
