Reading and writing development of 54 children from grade one through four was studied. Poor first-grade readers almost invariably were poor readers at completion of grade four. Norm-referenced mathematics achievement tests for Hawaii public school students in four ethnic groups and in grades 4, 6, 8, and 10 were examined for sex differences.
