Sawada, Daiyo; Atkinson, Thomas P. – Alberta Journal of Educational Research, 1981
Evidence gathered in a study of 106 students in a course in elementary school mathematics methods shows that work with a nondecimal numeration system involving entirely new number symbols and names can lead to heightened awareness and appreciation of difficulties that children might have in understanding base ten numeration. (Author/CM)

Hughes, Barnabas – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
The history of Hawaiian number systems is examined, and answers to questions regarding Hawaiian number words, including their origin and factors that influenced their development, are covered. A brief guide for pronouncing Hawaiian words is also provided. (MP)

Saxe, Geoffrey B. – Child Development, 1981
Two studies indicate that Oksapmin children progress from premediational to mediational phases in their use of body parts to compare and reproduce number and that this change generally occurs prior to the development of concepts of number conservation. A third study shows that this general change is manifested in culturally specific ways.…

Hughes, Barnabas; Anderson, Kim A. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1996
Discusses how American and Canadian Indians created mathematical connections and the first numeration systems used north of Mexico. A listing of various tribes, their locations, and how their simple or complex methods of computing may have originated from establishing a correspondence between different parts of the body and quantities they wished…

Wright, Bob – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1990
Described is a study designed to extend a theoretical model of children's progression from a perceptual to an abstract concept of number. The implications of this research for the design of mathematics curricula are discussed. (CW)

Nicholson, A. R. – Mathematics in School, 1989
Presents examples of 3-by-3 and 4-by-4 magic squares. Proves that the numbers 1 to 10 can not be fitted to the intersections of a pentagram and that the sum of the 4 numbers on each line is always 22. (YP)

Thwaites, G. N. – Mathematics in School, 1989
Discusses a counting system and number operations. Suggests six distinct areas in a "number" subject: one-to-one correspondences; simple counting process; complicated counting process; addition and multiplication; algorithms for the operations; and the decimal system. (YP)

Steinberg, Heinz – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1989
The question is raised: What comes first: rules of calculation or the meaning of concepts? The pressures on the teacher to teach and simplify knowledge to algorithms are discussed. The relation between conceptual and procedural knowledge in school mathematics and consequences for the teacher's professional knowledge are considered. (DC)

Vaidya, Sheila Rao – Education, 2004
Dyscalculia, a poor understanding of the number concept and the number system, is a learning problem affecting many individuals. However, less is known about this disability than about the reading disability, dyslexia, because society accepts learning problems in mathematics as quite normal. This article provides a summary of the research on…

Carpenter, Thomas P.; And Others – 1994
In this paper four programs are described in which children learn multidigit number concepts and operations with understanding: (1) the Supporting Ten-Structured Thinking projects, (2) the Conceptually Based Instruction project, (3) Cognitively Guided Instruction projects, and (4) the Problem Centered Mathematics Project. The diversity in these…

Kepaski, Krume; Jusuf, Shaip – 1985
An English translation of a grammar of the language used by the Roma, a group of wanderers living in many countries, united by a common language, and often called Bohemians or gypsies, begins with a translator's preface concerning the group's history and the development of the language and dialects. Preliminary material contains a brief history of…
