Pamela Carroll Hess
ProQuest LLC, D.B.A. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
This qualitative descriptive study explored how health informatics employers and practitioners perceive the skill needed by the health informatics workforce to increase employability in the U.S. The study also addresses how master's degree competencies align with employer perception of health informatics skills and curricula development partnerships with the academy. The conceptual frameworks used to guide this study are the Employability Skills Framework by the U.S. Department of Education and the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) academic competencies. The data was collected from interviews of health informatics executives, hiring managers and practitioner. The research suggests that skills listed in the synthesized health informatics skills framework are needed in the healthcare industry today. The study shows that the health informatics master's degree is valuable to employability. Additionally, participants suggest student-to-employee pipelines that would provide the best and the brightest for the growing health informatics workplace. Recommendations for future study include student and instructor perceptions and preceptors from a sample of universities throughout the U.S. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
