A Mixed-Methods Study of Supports for Teachers' Good Mental Health within Multiple Texas School Districts
Alysha Mendez
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Texas
From stress and burnout, to anxiety and depression, teachers are suffering from various mental health issues. Teacher mental health concerns are affecting school and classroom climates, attrition rates, and student performance. Teachers are in need of school district-provided mental health supports, practices, and programs. This mixed-methods descriptive study used interviews with Human Resources administrators and teacher surveys to explore school district mental health supports. The study includes a descriptive analysis of which district mental health supports teachers know about, which of those supports they're utilizing, and why they are or why they are not utilizing those supports. Further, the study found what more teachers believe they need from their schools and school districts, to better support their mental health. Findings indicated many teachers are not aware of the mental health supports that their districts have available, and many find the supports inadequate or unaccommodating. Teachers also described how their site administrators greatly influence their mental health--positively or negatively. Teacher participants expressed needs for stress relief, more allotted time, recognition and rewards from administration, free and confidential counseling, and more--mental health supports tailored to their specific needs.
