There is a lack of information regarding strategic planning within athletic departments at the NCAA Division II level. A survey of all 306 NCAA DII athletic directors was implemented in an attempt to provide up-to-date data. The investigation focused on the prevalence of strategic plans within athletic departments at the NCAA DII level and a polling of NCAA DII directors of athletics regarding the perceived impact that strategic planning has had or would have on their departments. Results showed that 57% of NCAA DII athletic departments have developed a formal strategic plan. Typical components of these plans include written objectives and goals, mission statements, written values, and vision statements. Survey results show that directors of athletics who have strategic plans believe that the impact strategic planning had on their departments is stronger than the impact perceived to occur by directors of athletics without strategic plans. A statistical analysis did not show any significant impact that strategic planning has on points earned by NCAA DII athletic departments in the NACDA Director's Cup. The results of this study will add to the literature around athletic departments of traditionally smaller institutions as well as the of the strategic planning processes of athletic departments to aid directors of athletics and other administrators to impact their organizations through strategic planning.
