Benson, Jeri – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1987
This study demonstrated the use of confirmatory factor analysis to investigate the existence of item bias in an affective scale measuring self-concept. Data were collected from three ethnic groups in grade eight. A differential response pattern found across the three groups indicated potential bias in score interpretation. (Author/LMO)

Hogan, Andrew – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1986
This study derives the economic costs of misclassification in nursing home patient classification systems. These costs are then used as weights to estimate the reliability of a functional assessment instrument. Results suggest that reliability must be redefined and remeasured with each substantively new application of an assessment instrument.…

Harris, Deborah J.; Subkoviak, Michael J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1986
This study examined three statistical methods for selecting items for mastery tests: (1) pretest-posttest; (2) latent trait; and (3) agreement statistics. The correlation between the latent trait method and agreement statistics, proposed here as an alternative, was substantial. Results for the pretest-posttest method confirmed its reputed…

Blixt, Sonya L.; Shama, Deborah D. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1986
Methods of estimating the standard error at different ability levels were compared. Overall, it was found that at a given ability level the standard errors calculated using different formulas are not appreciably different. Further, for most situations the traditional method of calculating a standard error probably provides sufficient precision.…

Pickering, Miles – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1986
Offers perspectives on the placement and value of statistical studies in science education. Cites examples from the field of chemical education that address evaluation concerns and problems. Points out factors to consider and questions to ask in reviewing research studies. (ML)

Birenbaum, Menucha; Montag, Itzhak – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1986
The purpose of this study was to examine the location of Zukerman's sensation seeking (SS) construct in the personality domain as measured by Cattell's 16 personality factors (16PF). Results of the factor analytic study indicated that the global construct of sensation seeking is related to the broad personality factor of independence. (Author/LMO)

Phillips, S. E. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1986
Rasch model equatings of multilevel achievement test data before and after the deletion of misfitting persons were compared. Rasch equatings were also compared with an equating obtained using the equipercentile method. No basis could be found in the results for choosing between the two Rasch equatings. (Author/LMO)

Etezadi-Amoli, Jamshid; McDonald, Roderick P. – Psychometrika, 1983
Nonlinear common factor models with polynomial regression functions, including interaction terms, are fitted by simultaneously estimating the factor loadings and common factor scores, using maximum likelihood and least squares methods. A Monte Carlo study gives support to a conjecture about the form of the distribution of the likelihood ratio…

Hedges, Larry V. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1982
A statistical test is described which determines homogeneity of effect size of an experiment series. An overall fit statistic is partitioned into between-class fit statistic and within-class fit statistic. These statistics permit assessment of differences between effect sizes for different classes and homogeneity of effect size within classes.…

Carr, Ronnie; Ledwith, Frank – Teaching at a Distance, 1980
The problems and progress of a group of students designated as disadvantaged upon college entry and demographic factors that may be critical predictors of disadvantaged students' academic failure in a course are examined. Special advising and intervention are recommended, so that students need not take the initiative to seek help. (MSE)

Lundgren, David C.; Schwab, Mary R. – Youth and Society, 1979
A comparison of commuting and noncommuting college students indicates that a student's residential context has a significant influence on his relationships with his parents and with his peers, and on his self-esteem. (EB)

Ritt, Leonard G. – Ethnicity, 1979
This paper examines Native American orientations on a variety of political and social issues. These opinions are contrasted to those of Blacks, Spanish Americans, and Anglos.
