Gottfried, Adele E. – 1974
Two purposes guided this study: (1) to investigate the effects of modeling on the verbalizations of lower-class, black, preschool children; and (2) to investigate the relationships between the dialect employed by the model and children's language production. As subjects, 72 black, preschool children in lower-class neighborhood day care centers of…

Pedrini, D. T.; And Others – 1973
Briefly reviewed is research on paired-associate learning in which subjects usually are retardates. Paired-associate learning is said to involve mediation of associations for numbers, letters, grouping of numbers or letters, or other groups such as words. It is explained that retardates have been used as subjects in research on paired-associate…

Wolff, Peter – 1971
Recent theories of verbal memory have hypothesized that memory for a stimulus is not represented by a unitary memory trace, but rather by a coding on several attributes of the event. The present experiment tested the differential forgetting hypothesis in a unique way. Words were presented either visually (V) or auditorally (A) in a continuous…

Ausubel, David P. – 1970
In this third Occasional Paper in the Science series of The Science and Mathematics Education Information Analysis Center, Ausubel explains the nature and theoretical rationale of "organizers", abstract, general, and inclusive statements presented prior to new learning tasks to provide specific relevant anchoring ideas in the learner's…

McDonald, Frederick J. – 1968
This paper makes an informational analysis of teachers' verbal discourse. A behavioral analysis is also made in terms of "tacts" and "mands," as defined by Skinner. These behavioral components of a message may be quantified in terms of "originality,""redundancy," and "complexity." But the most…

Tennyson, Robert D. – 1973
An experiment replicated and extended a previous study on the value of negative instances in concept learning (i.e., an instance of something which does not exemplify the concept helps to make clear what the concept is). In this experiment, the concept to be learned was "adverb". The subjects were seventh grade students. Some groups of subjects…

Perfetti, Charles A.; And Others – 1971
Norms of free association to common ambiguous English words are reported. Responses were categorized on the basis of sense relevance. On this basis, the sense dominance of the words was quantified, and the degree of ambiguity associated with each word estimated by the information measure U. This publication will be of interest primarily to…

CALFEE, ROBERT C. – 1966
THE EFFECTS OF INTERPOLATED ITEMS ON THE LEARNING AND RETENTION OF INDIVIDUAL STIMULUS-RESPONSE (S-R) UNITS IN PAIRED-ASSOCIATE LEARNING WERE INVESTIGATED. EXPERIMENTS WERE DESIGNED TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF INTERFERENCE PRODUCED BY OTHER ITEMS WHICH OCCUR NATURALLY WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF A STANDARD PAIRED-ASSOCIATE TASK. IN ADDITION, SEVERAL…

Smith, Anderson D. – Developmental Psychology, 1976
The results of this study indicate that age differences in the recall of high frequency word lists are not related to the total presentation time of the lists but appear to be affected by differences in retrieval processes as a function of age. (JMB)

Healy, Alice F. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
A Markov model was proposed to account for the short-term retention of the spatial arrangement of letters. The model was fit to three spatial location recall conditions in experiments which differed in distractor task. The rate of information transfer from primary to secondary memory was affected by changes in distractor task. (SW)

Newman, Jean E.; Dell, Gary S. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
The results of two experiments indicate that the two phonological properties of a word, its initial phoneme and length, strongly influence the latency to detect a target phoneme which begins the following word. Studies showing increased detection latencies following ambiguity are analyzed. (SW)

Mollet, David – Educational Theory, 1978
The viewpoint is advanced that induction is a determing factor in the way knowledge is acquired and that in the acquisition of a language and the development of knowledge this process plays a crucial role. (JD)

Okun, Morris A.; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1978
Young (N=22) (age 17-21) and 22 old (age 60-74) men and women participated in an investigation designed to determine how differences in omission errors and performance in a serial learning task are accounted for by cautiousness. Cautiousness measures accounted for age differences in omission errors but not in performance. (Author)

Peng, Samuel S.; Farr, S. David – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1976
Fifth grade students completed ten trials of recalling familiar nouns plus two summary trials. Alpha factor analysis indicated that the measurement procedures may be conceived of as derived from a single domain and the use of a summary trial was a simple way to increase the generalizability of a particular measurement procedure. Lee, Catherine L.; Estes, William K. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
A short-term recall task in which letters were spaced in different ways by distractor digits was used to separate aspects of primary and secondary memory processes and to permit examination of primary memory for position, order and item independently. Memory for order appeared derivative to memory for temporal position. (CHK)
