Hiring Seniors: Everybody Gives, Everybody Benefits
Ruder, Robert
School Business Affairs, v77 n11 p20, 22 Dec 2011
Living on fixed incomes and faced with increasing taxes, senior citizens frequently feel the squeeze of a tightening economy more than other populations. Their retirement dollars buy less as their property taxes inch upward, despite the fact that they don't have school-age children. The Hempfield and Manheim Township School Districts in Pennsylvania's Lancaster County provide some relief by offering seniors the opportunity to reduce their tax obligations through tax-credit programs. Simply put, seniors work for the school district as substitute employees. In exchange, a predetermined amount of their net salaries is applied to their property tax bills. It's a win-win situation for districts that hire seniors as substitute employees.
