The Impact of Education on Incarcerated Youth and Educational Gains at a Juvenile Facility in Rural Nevada Using Test for Adult Assessment Results: a Quantitative Study Using Casual Comparative Design

I will discuss data collected throughout this dissertation to discover whether adjudicated youth made educational gains while incarcerated at a juvenile facility in rural Nevada. The problem addressed in this study was adjudicated youth returning to a society lacking the support necessary to succeed in education and life. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine pre-test and post-test Test of Adult Assessment scores to measure any academic gains of adjudicated youth while incarcerated at a juvenile facility in rural Nevada. The juveniles adjudicated within the juvenile justice system are impacted when it comes to their education while incarcerated. Therefore, I reviewed the scores to determine what academic help could be provided for these students. This study's data were archived from the school year 2018-2019 using the Test of Adult Assessment to track the students. This study's findings using MANOVA indicated a significant increase in Test of Adult Assessment scores between the pre-test and post-test for youth incarcerated for a minimum of six months. Additionally, univariate tests showed substantial increases in scores for reading and math between pre-test and post-test. However, there was no significant difference in language scores between pre-test and post-test. This study's findings matched the research that students who attend school regularly will make educational gains. The information gathered in this study will benefit the juvenile justice system by showing that schools are necessary for students to further their education even though they are incarcerated. The study did provide data and research that judges, administrators, parole officers, and other court-appointed officials can use to show why educating youth while incarcerated is a vital part of their re-entry into society. In the future, administrators at correctional facilities will need to do more research to understand the importance of students making educational gains. It would also be wise for more state agencies to be included in the study to understand better what students need and what is provided for them.
