Most faculty earn some supplemental income beyond their base salary, but the average amount is not large. A study found the amount of supplemental income is positively correlated with research productivity, unrelated to institutional and departmental involvement, and negatively related to time spent and relative interest in teaching. Moonlighting practices of 416 elementary and secondary school teachers were studied, comparing those who moonlight with those who do not. Results show that moonlighters tend to be younger, better educated, and less satisfied with current employment but no more likely to plan to quit than other teachers. (SLD)

Since moonlighting by residents in addition to their demanding residency work schedule might jeopardize patient care, decisions to moonlight are examined.
