The Effect of a Safety Incentive Program on Perceptions of Safety Culture
Richard A. Hellings
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
Due to the high risk associated with collegiate aviation programs, the need to increase safety is paramount. Previous research has established a link between safety culture and safety performance in industry as well as in collegiate aviation programs. This study sought to evaluate changes in students' perceptions of a university's aviation safety culture based on their participation in the university's safety incentive program. It was hypothesized that the more involved a student was in the safety incentive program the more positive their perceptions of the safety culture would be. The results of this study found that over the five-week safety incentive period, students' perceptions of the university's safety culture did increase. However, there was not a statistically significant difference between those who participated in the safety incentive program and those who did not. Furthermore, in this study only some of the collected demographic data had statistically significant correlation with students' perceptions of the safety culture, a finding at odds with previous studies.
