This article traces the development of 22 children with learning disabilities and 22 controls at ages 1, 2, 10, 18, and 32 years. Most learning-disabled individuals made a successful adaptation to adult life, with marriage, divorce, and employment rates similar to the cohort as a whole. Design, nationwide standardization, and validation of the Adjustment Scales for Children and Adolescents are presented, using a norm sample of 1,400 5- through 17-year-olds, with an additional 1,418 in supplementary samples. Comprehension and Picture Arrangement Wechsler subtest scores were correlated with clinician ratings of social competence and hostility for 82 children at risk for psychopathology and 62 healthy children and 124 at-risk and 113 healthy adolescents.
