Towards FEAR-Less Learning: The Role of Heterotopic Affinity Spaces
Higher Education Research and Development, v44 n1 p282-297 2025
This article introduces a framework for transforming Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) through Heterotopic Affinity Spaces (HAS). Our model suggests HAS can shift traditional power dynamics by enhancing learner agency. Drawing on studies of affinity spaces and heterotopias, we present these spaces as free from the restrictions of formal education and academic regulations (FEAR), moving towards a FEAR-less learning future. A case study from the Foundry at UWE Bristol supports our model, showing how HAS fosters creativity, teamwork, and challenges to educational norms. The framework we offer provides educators and policymakers with a tool to improve educational environments for increased agency. Ultimately, this research advocates for adopting HAS as a strategy for innovation in HEIs, empowering learners by breaking down traditional barriers to social and spatial agency.
