Jani, Subhash N. – Academic Therapy, 1983
Resistance applied to activities of rocking, creeping, and walking as a means to increase visual attention of students who are easily distracted is described. The resistance activities are said to result in improvement of gross motor coordination, oculomotor control, memory processes, and untimately, greater efficiency in academic learning. (CL)

Carnine, Douglas W. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1981
Following pretraining on three figures, 44 nonhandicapped preschoolers were assigned to experimental groups to investigate methods of integrating a new, similar symbol into a set of familiar symbols to approximate the difficult disciminations encountered by young children in school. (Author)
Descriptors: Aural Learning, Discrimination Learning, Learning Disabilities, Learning Processes

Tinsley, James – Journal for Special Educators, 1980
Scores on the Picture Arrangement subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised of 41 eight-year-olds referred for academic learning difficulties were analyzed. Results suggested that visual sequencing skills and language development skills are necessary prerequisites for reading and spelling. (CL)

Scheel, Virginia; Galbraith, Gary C. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1980
Thirty-five institutionalized, mentally retarded individuals (17 to 47 years old) navigated an obstacle course while viewing through an optical prism that displaced the visual field (visual-motor rearrangement). The degree of adaptation to visual-motor rearrangement was assessed and compared with scores on a research version of the Adaptive…

Sonnier, Isodore L.; Kemp, Judy B. – Southern Journal of Educational Research, 1980
Based on the theory that the human left brain hemisphere processes verbal-sequential data and that the right hemisphere processes visual-spatial data, this article presents a teaching strategy for stimulating both hemispheres. It also describes the study that contributed to this strategy. (DS)

Bernstein, Gail Bruskoff – Education of the Visually Handicapped, 1979
Twelve integration techniques, such as tracing shapes on paper, are described and suggestions for five activities (including materials needed, activity directions, implications, positioning, cautions, and adaptations) are provided. (For related material, see EJ 216 140 and EJ 216 239.) (PHR)
Descriptors: Instructional Materials, Program Descriptions, Teaching Methods, Visual Impairments
Owens, R. David; Coldevin, Gary O. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1977
This study compares three multi-stage versions of a tape-slide presentation with a parallel single image format. Multi-image treatments differed in the amount of time two images were simultaneously in view. (Author)
Descriptors: Aural Learning, Educational Research, Learning Modalities, Media Research

Mayer, Richard E.; Massa, Laura J. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2003
Examines the hypothesis that some people are verbal learners and some people are visual learners. Presented a battery of 14 cognitive measures related to the visualizer-verbalizer dimension to 95 college students and then conducted correlational and factor analyses. Results have implications for how to conceptualize and measure individual…

Knowlton, Marie – Exceptional Children, 1997
Visual scanning behavior and efficiency of 22 children with visual disabilities and 25 children without disabilities (ages 3.5 to 10 years) were studied. Significant differences were found between groups in length of scan path and number of objects reported, but no significant differences in scanning efficiency. Coordinated binocular eye movements…
Descriptors: Children, Partial Vision, Vision, Visual Discrimination

Shambaugh, R. Neal – Journal of Visual Literacy, 1995
From a cognitive point of view, students construct new knowledge frameworks by relating new information to prior knowledge. Visual constructions help students reestablish unity of knowledge from "bits" of information received in linear note taking. Discusses the benefits of note taking and review, and summarizes visual note-taking…

Cane, Tina – Teachers & Writers, 2003
Contends that to mindfully appreciate the shape a poem carves onto a page is to view its words and lines in relief, to consider how the contours of a poem contribute to its meaning. Explains that the notion of blank space as a defining element of poetry is simple yet radical, and is a subtle challenge to students who define poetry as beautiful…
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Poetry, Student Attitudes, Teaching Methods

Johnson, Diane B. – Exercise Exchange, 1988
Presents an assignment which utilizes alternative ways to absorb new information: using a small section of the material to be learned, students illustrate on a poster board what they think it means and teach each other when they present their posters to the class. (RAE)
Descriptors: Art Expression, Freehand Drawing, Learning Processes, Secondary Education

Clyde, Jean Anne – Language Arts, 1994
Discusses how a teacher was challenged to outgrow previously held beliefs about children and broaden her verbocentric curricular assumptions and experiences by a student for whom art stabilized and gave shape to his thoughts. Notes that the student helped bring real meaning to the idea that learning is "multimodal" in nature. (RS)
Descriptors: Art Activities, Cognitive Processes, Primary Education, Visual Learning

Bedford, Felice L. – Cognition, 1995
Addresses two questions that may be unique to perceptual learning: What are the circumstances that produce learning? and What is the content of learning? Suggests a critical principle for each question. Provides a discussion of perceptual learning theory, how learning occurs, and what gets learned. Includes a 121-item bibliography. (DR)

Karrer, Rathe; And Others – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1995
Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 6-month-old infants with and without Down syndrome presented with a visual recognition memory task. The ERP morphology was the same for both groups. The chronometry of information processing by infants with Down syndrome was similar to or faster than "normal" infants' processing.…
