Barringer, Mary S. – 1995
Researchers are becoming increasingly aware of the advantages of using multiple regression as opposed to analysis of variance (ANOVA) or analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Multiple regression is more versatile and does not force the researcher to throw away variance by categorizing intervally scaled data. Polynomial regression analysis offers the…

Woolley, Thomas W. – Journal of Medical Education, 1983
Analysis of 230 major articles in the "Journal of Medical Education" shows 91 percent of those reporting medical education research had less than a 50-50 chance of detecting a small treatment effect. Similar low statistical power was found in other disciplines. Guidelines for reporting research are provided. (MSE)

Trites, R. L.; Price, M. A. – Interchange on Educational Policy, 1978
A two-year study of learning disabilities found in association with French immersion programs indicates that children encountering difficulty in primary French immersion programs have a specific learning disability characterized by a pattern suggesting a maturational lag in the temporal lobe regions of the brain. (JMF)

Pleck, Joseph H.; And Others – Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, 1994
Investigates the discriminant validity of a measure of attitudes toward male roles, the Male Role Attitude Scale, using data from the 1988 National Survey of Adolescent Males. Results support the argument that attitudes toward male roles are conceptually different from other gender-related attitudes. (SLD)

Kellermann, Kathy – Communication Monographs, 2001
Examines assumptions underlying the employment of group means in communication research. Suggests a sample mean cannot be assumed to be a "good" statistic when the response vector represents different individuals' outcomes versus different outcomes of an individual. Notes implications for communication research. (SR)

Yeager, Joseph; Sommer, Linda – Qualitative Report, 2007
Selecting a statistical framework for a behavioral study has profoundly different results than does a linguistically framed research strategy. The linguistic strategy overcomes many limitations inherent in statistical strategies and offers more meaningful results. Inferential statistical studies often discuss how the findings "explain" the results…

Ben-Simon, Anat; Bennett, Randy Elliott – Journal of Technology, Learning, and Assessment, 2007
This study evaluated a "substantively driven" method for scoring NAEP writing assessments automatically. The study used variations of an existing commercial program, e-rater[R], to compare the performance of three approaches to automated essay scoring: a "brute-empirical" approach in which variables are selected and weighted solely according to…

Kleban, Morton H. – 1983
The paper is a critique of the traditional mode of interpreting factor analyses; it is not a criticism of factor analysis per se. Instead, the author proposes a statistical procedure based upon stepwise regression (SRP). The traditional mode focuses on the largest factor loadings (FL). A factor is both described and named by these heavily weighted…

Plants, H. L.; Venable, W. S. – Engineering Education, 1975
Discusses the format, grading procedures, and student reaction to two undergraduate engineering courses taught by programed instruction. Statistical analysis shows that the programed instruction resulted in higher and more uniform student achievement than did the conventional instruction in the same subject area. (MLH)
