The present study used qualitative methods in order to compare perspectives of young survivors of sex trafficking at a non-government organization (NGO) rehabilitation facility in a large city in Cambodia with those of U.S. staff. Both groups were asked about their perceptions regarding problems and healing that occur within the Cambodian national, "Khmer," youth at the facility. Emergent coding of both informant groups' responses yielded three common problems that occur at the outset of rehabilitation: (1) mixed attitudes toward treatment, (2) emotional distress, and (3) asocial behaviors. Coding also revealed two common types of healing identified by both groups: (1) internal, and (2) external healing. This is one of the first cross-cultural, qualitative studies to be conducted with Khmer youth survivors of sex trafficking. By exploring the unique types of problems that this group experiences and how they understand the healing process, future aid workers and researchers can provide more precise, culturally-informed treatment interventions.
