The Awe Factor: From Lichen to Loving-Kindness Meditation
Aishwarya Sankaranarayanan
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v36 n4 p34-39 2024-2025
By virtue of their innate curiosity and the fact that they are often surrounded by novel experiences, children commonly experience awe, which can prompt them to consider their understanding of the world and their place in it. Nature can be one of these awe-eliciting wonders of life. Maria Montessori understood this well, especially when it came to children. Dr. Montessori also recognized the prosocial power of awe and its relevance for peace education. Peace education in Montessori focuses on the development of a child's inner peace, their spirit, their role as individuals, and a deeper understanding of their place in the world. This sense of self as a part of something greater is reinforced in the Elementary years through the awe-inspiring series of five Great Lessons. Alongside nature experiences and dramatic lessons, a Montessori classroom has myriad avenues to create awe-eliciting moments that can have positive benefits for children of all ages. This article delves into four other potential areas that can open up pathways to experience awe and wonder in classrooms.
