Describes an investigation of whether grades in an intensive French course could be predicted by combining information obtained in a brief interview conducted by the teacher with information from academic records. Research suggests that special tests of reasoning ability are superfluous. Reading comprehension and algebra scores on common aptitude and achievement tests are highly correlated with scores on several reasoning tests. This study investigated the interactive effects on performance and motivation of four motivational aptitudes and two cognitive aptitudes with a choice versus no-choice treatment manipulation in grades 4-5.
