Morton, Pierre
New England Journal of Higher Education, Jan 2022
Among his accomplishments, Dr. Martin Luther King served as a driving force in securing basic civil rights for black Americans, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. He played a crucial role organizing and leading the protests which led to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that racial segregation on public buses was unconstitutional. His contributions to the 1963 March on Washington and his epic "I Have a Dream" speech delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial is viewed by scholars as the defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement. Pierre Morton reflects on the topic of racial healing and considers Dr. King's life and accomplishments. He also thinks it is equally important to understand his journey.
