Winn, William – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Results of this study suggest that diagrams provide different types of information for ninth-grade students (N=273) and that learners process each type differently. Flow diagrams running across a page from either left to right or right to left, or with or without drawings of dinosaurs, were used. (JN)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Diagrams, Grade 9, Junior High School Students

O'Neil, J. Peter – Science and Children, 1981
Describes Waunakee Community School's six-week Summer Science Program for students entering the seventh grade. Students are selected for this science enrichment program on the basis of interest, ability, and maturity. Program content includes wetlands, forests, prairies, and animals, concluding with a camping trip. (DS)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Enrichment Activities, Environmental Education, Grade 7

Korporaal, Arie R. – Science and Children, 1980
Discussed is the intertidal region and the characteristics and adaptations of the organisms that live in that region. Several activities that involve the intertidal region are described, which reinforce the adaptive behaviors and forms of the organisms found in the intertidal region. (Author/DS)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Elementary School Science, Elementary Secondary Education, Environmental Education

Education in Science, 1979
Several potential safety problems are identified relative to science teaching: the use of bottled gas or alcohol lamps as heat sources, the hazards of Millon's Reagent for testing for proteins, and the use of silicon tetrachloride to demonstrate properties of chlorides. Science teachers are also warned about potentially dangerous procedures…
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Chemical Reactions, Guidelines, Health

Grafton, Thurman S. – American Biology Teacher, 1979
The use of live animals in the secondary school laboratory is discussed along with suggestions for increasing the use of live animals and challenges to those teachers who restrict this use. (SA)
Descriptors: Animal Behavior, Animal Husbandry, Biological Sciences, Educational Resources

Sigismondi, Linda A. – American Biology Teacher, 1989
A paper model which is designed to give students a hands-on experience during lecture and blackboard instruction on DNA structure is provided. A list of materials, paper patterns, and procedures for using the models to teach DNA structure and replication are given. (CW)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biology, College Science

Bisbee, Gregory D. – Science Teacher, 1990
The use of living animals in the classroom is discussed. A checklist of ideas to remember when considering housing animals in the classroom is provided. (CW)
Descriptors: Animals, Biological Sciences, Culturing Techniques, Ethics

DiSpezio, Michael A. – Science Teacher, 1990
Contrasted are DNA viruses, RNA viruses, and RNA retroviruses. The structure, genome, and replication of retroviruses are discussed. The discovery, structure, and action of the HIV virus are described. A list of 17 references is included. (CW)
Descriptors: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Biological Sciences, Communicable Diseases, Disease Control

Lundeberg, Mary A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1990
Presented are the results of a study of the effects of peer-led tutoring groups on achievement in college chemistry. Supplemental instruction was effective in increasing students' achievement in chemistry as measured by final grades in chemistry and responses to a questionnaire. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Cognitive Development, College Science

Tawney, D. A. – Journal of Biological Education, 1989
Discussed are hazardous substance regulations in Great Britain which effect science teaching at the secondary and college level. Included are background information, immediate implications for schools and colleges, and risk assessments concerning biology classrooms. The responsibilities of Local Education Associations are highlighted. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Biology, College Science, Foreign Countries

Dolan, Arthur – Science Scope, 1988
Describes a mouse skeleton reconstruction activity from owl pellets. Gives information about the materials, directions for students, and a five-day unit schedule. Provides some owl pellet sources. (YP)
Descriptors: Anatomy, Biological Sciences, Biology, Junior High Schools
