Hagtvet, Knut A.; Hagtvet, Bente E. – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1990
The discriminant validity of two subscales of the Reynell Developmental Language Scales (RDLS) was investigated using data from 225 children given the RDLS at age 4 and the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities at age 5. Results support the hypothesis; the RDLS scales measure distinct but correlated language abilities. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comprehension, Construct Validity, Discriminant Analysis, Expressive Language

Brown, C. R.; Njabili, A. F. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1989
Explores the concept of construct validity in the context of a public examination. Multitrait-multimethod analysis and factor analysis were used. Discusses the analyses in terms of theory versus practical components and experimental versus observational investigation in practical components. Sample items for the practical examinations are…
Descriptors: Biology, Construct Validity, Factor Analysis, Foreign Countries

Daud, Nuraihan Mat – Computer Assisted Language Learning, 1995
Discusses the development of a scale to measure variables that may have an effect on teacher's affective attitudes towards computer-assisted language learning. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were used in the development of the scale to ensure its validity and reliability. (13 references) (Author/CK)
Descriptors: Affective Behavior, Case Studies, Computer Assisted Instruction, Construct Validity

Messick, Samuel – American Psychologist, 1995
Presents a comprehensive review of validity that includes an empirical evaluation of the actual and potential consequences of score interpretation and use, how those consequences come about, and what determines them. Six distinguishable aspects of construct validity are highlighted as a means of addressing central issues implicit in the notion of…
Descriptors: Concurrent Validity, Construct Validity, Content Validity, Models

Stanovich, Keith E. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1991
This paper argues that using intelligence as an aptitude benchmark in defining reading disability conceals unsupported assumptions about educational potential and makes it difficult to differentiate the cognitive characteristics of dyslexic children from those of other poor readers. The use of a more educationally relevant aptitude measure such as…
Descriptors: Academic Ability, Academic Achievement, Academic Aptitude, Construct Validity

Pike, Gary R. – Journal of General Education, 1992
Presents a study comparing two measures of general education outcomes, focusing on the validity of these instruments as measures of program effectiveness. Challenges the perceived advantages of standardized testing as measures of general education outcomes, recommending qualitative, institution-specific approaches relying on student and faculty…
Descriptors: College Outcomes Assessment, Comparative Analysis, Construct Validity, Evaluation Methods

Allen, Linda; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1992
Different methods of measuring print experience were studied for 63 fifth graders who completed daily activity diaries. Book reading time estimate was correlated with new measures of reading time that use a checklist. Results support recognition checklist measures as convenient proxy indicators of children's print exposure. (SLD)
Descriptors: Check Lists, Children, Cognitive Processes, Construct Validity
Tindal, Gerald; And Others – Diagnostique, 1992
This study examined the construct validity of curriculum-based measures of oral reading fluency from basal reading programs. Twelve special education students (grades 2-5) were monitored for oral fluency using 2 reading curricula (their instructional curriculum and the mainstream reading curriculum) throughout the academic year. Performance…

Shechtman, Zipora; Godfried, Levana – Journal of Teacher Education, 1993
This study investigated the concurrent and construct validity of an alternative group assessment procedure. The study assessed performance and personal traits of teacher education students and compared group assessment ratings to faculty evaluations. Results established the group assessment procedure's construct and concurrent validity. (SM)

Diamond, Karen E.; Musser, Lynn M. – Journal of Environmental Education, 1999
The development of the Children's Attitudes Toward the Environment Scale--Preschool Version is reported. Construct validity of the scale was suggested by the pattern of relationships found between child and parent measures. Children's attitudes were not correlated with verbal ability, but with the degree to which children participated in…
Descriptors: Attitude Measures, Construct Validity, Educational Research, Environmental Education

Bernal, Ernesto M. – Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, 2000
Examines some problems of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS): multiple cutoff scores for passing the test and receiving a high school diploma, and artificially "tricky" items that disproportionately confuse language-minority students. Uses factor analysis and simulations to show ways to improve item selection for the TAAS.…

Williams, Thomas O., Jr.; Eaves, Ronald C. – Psychology in the Schools, 2005
The Pervasive Developmental Disorders Rating Scale (PDDRS; Eaves, 2003) is a rating scale that is used in the screening process for pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). The PDDRS contains three scales: Arousal, Affect, and Cognition. In this study, the construct validity of the PDDRS was examined with teacher ratings from a sample of 168…

Pellicano, Elizabeth; Maybery, Murray; Durkin, Kevin – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2005
Background: Frith and Happe (1994) describe central coherence (CC) as the normal tendency to integrate individual elements into a coherent whole, a cognitive style which varies in the general population. Individuals with autism are at the extreme (weak) end of the continuum of coherence. There has been debate over whether CC is independent from…

Cisneros-Cohernour, Edith J. – Quality of Higher Education, 2005
This paper focuses on the validity of the research conducted under the leading paradigm in the evaluation of teaching in higher education. Messick's framework on validity is used to identify the strengths and limitations of the research, mostly centered on the study of student ratings of instruction. Critical issues that need to be addressed by…

Carney, JoLynn V. – Journal of School Violence, 2005
The author explored the underlying dimensions and construct validity of the Bullying Situations Identification Instrument (BSI; Hazler, Miller, Carney, & Green, 2001) using exploratory factor analyses. Three dimensions of bullying severity were found using 251 school professionals as participants. The three factors that emerged from analyses were…
