Landrine, Hope – Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, 1988
For four studies, which provide modest support for the view that depression and stereotypes of certain classes of women are similar, overlapping categories are presented. Implications of these studies for the gender role hypothesis of depression are discussed, along with suggestions for future research. (Author/BJV)

Pothast, Henry L.; Allen, Craig M. – Child Abuse & Neglect: The International Journal, 1994
This study examined masculinity and femininity in adult male (n=75) and female (n=38) perpetrators of child sexual abuse. Results did not support the hypothesis that perpetrators of either sex would be more masculine and less feminine than nonclinical adult groups. Findings suggested a trend opposite the predicted direction. (DB)

Hunter, Andrea G.; Davis, James Earl – Journal of Black Studies, 1994
Interviews using a conceptualization methodology with 32 black men explore the meaning of manhood and provide a perspective on masculinity often hidden in the discourse on the black male crisis. Conceptions of manhood reported reflect the survival and inner strength a man can use to negotiate racism and economic oppression. (SLD)

Knutson, Gay G. – Journal of Humanistic Education and Development, 1990
Analyzed sex-role identities of 125 male and female college students who later completed programs in education. Findings showed that reporting of feminine attributions was virtually equal for elementary and secondary teachers, but reporting of masculine attributions was significantly higher for secondary teachers. (Author/PVV)
Descriptors: Androgyny, College Students, Elementary School Teachers, Elementary Secondary Education

Skelton, A. – Gender and Education, 1993
Provides the author's reflections on the experience of training to be a physical education teacher and shows how informal culture served to legitimate and reproduce a hegemonic form of masculinity within the student body. The paper concludes by arguing that attempts to improve the quality of practice cannot be separated from issues of masculinity.…

Skelton, Christine – British Journal of Sociology of Education, 1997
Explores the relationships between primary-aged boys, hegemonic masculinities, and sexualized/violent behaviors in the school setting. Shows that hegemonic masculinities vary from school to school and that boys draw upon, negotiate, and reject aspects of the hegemonic masculinity of the school in the process of constructing their masculine…

Castro-Vazquez, Genaro – Gender and Education, 2000
Interviewed adolescents and observed sex education classes to investigate condom use and masculinity among Mexican high school students. Adolescents were very concerned about sex education programming because of widespread information about AIDS, fears of pregnancy, and initiation into sexuality. Contraception decision making was highly determined…

Odih, Pamela – Race, Ethnicity and Education, 2002
The British government developed a program that assigned mentors to help secondary students overcome barriers to individual learning. This coincides with increasing calls within the black community and among male activists for male role models to remedy male student underachievement. Examines the sociohistorical, political, and cultural processes…

Goodwin, John; O'Connor, Henrietta – Journal of Education & Work, 2005
In this paper, the authors seek to examine the gendered nature of boys' school to work transitions for a group of young male workers entering employment for the first time in the 1960s. They argue that such an enquiry is important because past studies of transitions have not problematised boys school to work transitions in terms of gender.…

Mendick, Heather – British Journal of Sociology of Education, 2005
In this paper I address the question: How is it that people come to choose mathematics and in what ways is this process gendered? I draw on the findings of a qualitative research study involving interviews with 43 young people all studying mathematics in post-compulsory education in England. Working within a post-structuralist framework, I argue…

Chambers, Deborah; Tincknell, Estella; Van Loon, Joost – Gender and Education, 2004
This article examines the teenage policing of heterosexuality in schools and contributes to debates about teenage sexual moralities and heterosexual male agency. It reports on a qualitative study in England of the collective sexual values of 12- to 13-year-olds and 14- to 15-year-olds. Focus group interviews indicated that pupils developed a…

Martino, Wayne; Lingard, Bob; Mills, Martin – Gender and Education, 2004
This paper explores the effects of specific teacher threshold knowledges about boys and gender on the implementation of a so-called 'boy friendly' curriculum at one junior secondary high school in Australia. Through semi-structured interviews with selected staff at the school, it examines the normalizing assumptions and 'truth claims' about boys,…

Johnson, Corey W. – International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, 2005
Gay men are often rendered feminized males according to masculine, heterosexual ideologies. This research demonstrates that gay men are actually more creative and active agents in their gender performance, simultaneously resisting and reinforcing dominant ideologies around gender and sexuality. One context where the creative agency of gay men is…

Izugbara, C. Otutubikey – Sex Education: Sexuality, Society and Learning, 2004
Although young people in Nigeria become sexually active at a very early age, little is known about how they view sex, sexuality, and relationships with the opposite sex. Yet knowledge of their notions and expectations regarding these issues has the potential to improve care and inform the development of sexuality education programmes. This paper…
