Dunkleberger, Gary E.; Snyder, Sue – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
A workshop was designed to (1) train teachers to become experts on chemical safety and storage; (2) examine and evaluate chemical storage in 12 Carroll County (Maryland) schools; and (3) develop a safety guide for all county science classrooms. Development, implementation, evaluation, and implications of the workshop are addressed. (JN)

Gilbert, George L., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Describes a demonstration involving the controlled combustion of a mixture of metals with black and smokeless powder in a small Erlenmeyer flask. Also describes demonstrations using a device that precludes breathing of hazardous vapors during class demonstrations; the device is easy to transport and use in rooms without sinks. (JN)
Descriptors: College Science, Demonstrations (Educational), Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures

Pitt, Martin J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Discusses six common problems which may occur when using temporary labels on chemicals, samples, or mixtures in teaching or research laboratories. Solutions to each of these problems are offered. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, High Schools, Higher Education

Getman, Damon; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Presents a series of syntheses in which poly-4-vinylpyridine is substituted for pyridine or other tertiary amines, avoiding some of the safety problems associated with traditional reagents and providing a readily recoverable and recyclable reactant. Background information, procedures used, and results are included. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, College Science, Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures

Education in Science, 1976
Reviews the English booklet, "Safety in Science Laboratories." Included in the booklet is a discussion of teacher roles in ensuring safety in chemistry and biology laboratories. (SL)
Descriptors: Biology, Chemistry, Laboratory Procedures, Laboratory Safety
Stuart, Ralph – 2002
One of the major challenges facing people committed to Teaching Safety in High Schools, Colleges, and Universities is keeping up with both the wide range of relevant technical information about potential hazards (ranging from fire protection to chemical hazards to biological issues) and the ever-changing world of safety regulations and standards.…

Bruton, Sheila, Ed; Andrews, Bill, Ed.; Hammond, David, Ed. – 1999
This handbook was prepared to help science teachers, administrators, and other school staff members understand and avoid situations in which accidents might occur in the science laboratory, on field trips, or during outdoor education experiences. Suggestions contained in this publication are generally agreed upon and recommended for consideration…

Murphy, John O., Jr. – Man/Society/Technology--A Journal of Industrial Arts Education, 1973
Describes a grade card system for charting student progress. (SB)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Accidents, Behavior, Charts

Tinker, Robert – Physics Teacher, 1973
Analyzes the dangers of lasers in a classroom situation to formulate safety standards which are contrasted with federal regulations. Suggests that every laser user should check with the safety precautions to reduce the probability of producing a burn per student contact to extremely low levels. (CC)

Baum, Rudy – Chemical and Engineering News, 1982
Discusses danger of explosions with molten salts baths, commonly used as heat-transfer media. One such explosion involved use of a bath containing 3-lb sodium nitrite and 1-lb potassium thiocyanate. Although most commercially available mixtures for heat transfer contain oxidizers, a reducer (thiocyanate) was included which possibly triggered the…
