Exploring Definitions and Experiences of "Success" among First-Generation National Collegiate Athletics Association Division I Student-Athletes: A Qualitative Study
Nile Clifford Brandt
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The University of Utah
The purpose of this study was to center the experiences of National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) first-generation student-athletes within a predominantly White institution and explore how they define and experience "success" as it pertains to their collegiate careers. Narratives of diverse student-athletes were examined through an intersectional lens, with consideration of how mental health and help-seeking behaviors, cultural mismatch and cultural capital theories inform their conceptualizations of success. Data collection consisted of 10 semistructured interviews from male and female athletes from an array of sports. Data analysis was facilitated through iterative and inductive methods. Findings from the data were condensed into five major themes: (1) They try their best to understand, they try to relate, but (my parents) just don't have the experience to support my success as a student-athlete; (2) Focusing on my mental health was and is a game-changer; (3) Success means having a balance, prioritizing what's most important to you, and investing in yourself, inside and outside of sport; (4) A pawn in somebody's game: Success is about wins/losses; and (5) A successful student-athlete is able to make it to the finish line and enjoy the process. Discussion of these five themes are presented, as well as future directions for researchers, and implications for clinicians, administrators, and all stakeholders who are in positions to provide culturally-informed, holistic support for first-generation (first in family to be) collegiate student-athletes.
