The Effect of Mentorship on Student Retention in the RN-BSN Program

RN-BSN programs in the United States, especially in the Mid-Atlantic region, have experienced a decrease in enrollment in the last several years (AACN, 2023). In addition, Northeast University has faced retention challenges in recent years. Mentoring is beneficial in higher education when implemented, nurtured, and sustained throughout a student's course progression. I developed a mentoring program for RN-BSN students at Northeast University using a dedicated faculty nurse mentor (FNM). The FNM was the class instructor and utilized a researcher-designed Canvas course in combination with class materials. I explored the benefits of a mentoring program and FNM; the goals of the mentoring programs included easing the transition for students back to school to help them succeed and retain. Study participants were randomly selected and included students in one NUR 303, Transition to Baccalaureate Nursing Practice class in the fall of 2023; the study ran for seven weeks. I analyzed quantitative Likert scale results and qualitative open-ended survey questions using a mean and standard deviation design. Using thematic analysis, I coded the open-ended survey responses, found themes, and mapped them to the inquiry questions to determine if the content was favorable. The study results indicated that the mentoring program was helpful and that most modules in the Canvas course were beneficial. Two limitations were the sample size of seven participants and the study timeframe of seven weeks. Upon the culmination of the study and analysis, I recommend using the Canvas course in combination with an FNM to establish a mentoring program in the RN-BSN program at Northeast University, where the study was conducted.
