Implementing Principal Preparation Programs within School Districts: A Qualitative Study of a Leadership Academy
Caldwell, Adam
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This qualitative study investigated current assistant and head principals' perspectives on their prior participation in a school district leadership academy in the state of Louisiana. It was hoped that the findings would drive improvement efforts and future changes as the leadership academy adapts to the needs of future administrators. A guided interview protocol was utilized to interview nine principals regarding perceptions of the quality and worth of the leadership academy along with potential changes that may be required for enhancement. By examining a currently functioning principal preparation program, districts throughout the nation without administrative recruitment and enrichment strategies could learn to successfully implement a similar endeavor. Results revealed that six themes emerged from the study. The themes pertained to identifying and creating ideal principal preparation programs, administrative professional development, on-the-job support, and future leader succession. School districts across the nation are steadily becoming the preparation platform for administrators as states diminish qualifications, colleges close educational leadership programs, principal attrition rates increase, and teachers are being hired at faster rates to fill administrator voids.
