Kingma, J.; Koops, W. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1983
A study conducted with kindergarten and elementary school children showed that Piagetian tasks which measured seriation, conservation, and multiple classification were equal or superior to traditional intelligence tests in predicting number language, number line comprehension, and verbal arithmetic. (GC)

Silver, Edward – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1976
Students were pretested, then 27 first graders were trained using a highly verbal procedure emphasizing class addition activities. On posttests, trained subjects significantly improved their class inclusion and number conservation scores, but no effects were found for substance conservation or transitivity. (DT)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Conservation (Concept), Elementary School Mathematics, Elementary Secondary Education

Miller, Scott A. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1976
This is a detailed review of studies of extinction of Piagetian concepts, stressing that interpretation of such research is complicated by methodological problems, some avoidable, some intrinsic to the extinction paradigm; and that this paradigm retains the potential for contributing important information about the nature of concrete-operational…

Rittelmann, Richard – American School and University, 1974
Buildings should be designed so that energy systems function with maximum efficiency. Re-evaluation of standards for ventilation and lighting is recommended. Heat recovery techniques and topography can reduce heating loads. (MF)

Stephan, Ed – American School Board Journal, 1974
A computer was used to simulate weather conditions in a school district. As a result, several suggestions are made for significant savings on a school district's energy expenditures. (WM)

Descriptors: Adolescents, Conservation (Concept), Exceptional Child Research, Mental Retardation
Environmental Design, 1973
A process cooling system that provides a proven method of environmental control for computers as well as for occupants. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Climate Control, Computers, Conservation (Concept), Controlled Environment
Scandura, Joseph M.; McGee, Robert – Journal of Structural Learning, 1972
Piagetian and other tasks involving basic processing skills judged relevant to learning mathematics were used to establish baseline data on the capabilities of young children entering school. Some of the problems that involve specific attempts to improve such basic abilities were discussed. (JP)

Achenbach, Thomas M. – Psychological Reports, 1973
Normal and retarded children's use of color, number, length and continuous quantity as attributes of identification was assessed by presenting them with contrived changes in three properties. Surprise and correct memory responses for color preceded those to number, which preceded logical verbal responses to a conventional number-conservation task.…

Brainerd, Charles J. – Developmental Psychology, 1973
On the basis of these findings, both the measurement techniques of previous studies and Piaget's analysis of seriation are challenged. (Author)

Leyden, Michael B. – Science Activities, 1973
Describes two experiments on conservation of weight and volume based on Piaget's experiments. These experiments showed that some college students were unable to operate at the formal operations level. (PS)

Curcio, Frank; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1972
Children who recognize a compensatory relationship between height-width dimensions are more susceptible to conservation training than children who do not recognize this relationship. (Authors)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Compensation (Concept), Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept)

Silverman, Irwin William; Stone, Judith M. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1972
Study showed that the conservation responses acquired through participation in a problem-solving group are enduring and generalizable. (Authors)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Conservation (Concept), Data Analysis, Grade 3

Goldschmid, Marcel L. – Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 1973
The Concept Assessment Kit Conservation test was administered to 250 children from 6 countries. Results indicated that the age trends in conservation development for both males and females are fairly consistent from culture to culture. (DM)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Development, Conservation (Concept), Cross Cultural Studies
Phipps, H. Harry – American School and University, 1973
Those planning educational facilities should recognize the vital importance of energy conservation and its future effects on both the ecology of the nation and the economics of the school. (Author)
