The Impact of Sabbaticals on Organizations
Sheila D. Unwin
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aspen University
This qualitative study examines the perceptions of managers in organizations that offer sabbaticals as an employee benefit. This dissertation explores how this benefit impacts the organization through the changes in the employee upon returning. Twelve participants comprised of managers of employees who have taken a sabbatical in organizations within the United States with over 250 employees. The in-depth semi-structured interviews revealed that from the manager's perspective sabbaticals provided much-needed stress relief, which in turn prompted creative thinking and an increase in productivity. Based on the interviews, recommendations include that organizational leaders and human resources departments work to implement this benefit within their organization.
