The Equity and School Choice Conundrum
Calvinesha Weaver
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (Philadelphia, PA, Apr 11-14, 2024)
Over the past few decades, the call for fairness in education has shifted from a plea for equality to a plea for equity. However, there is a need to consider the warrant for equity on a scale that is larger than the classroom. School choice, as simple as it may seem, requires equity to provide minority students and those with low socioeconomic backgrounds to receive options that best fit their needs. Location, resources, and student population are just some factors that play a role in providing equity to facilitate school choice. While the goal of school choice is to provide equity for students and families, equity is needed to successfully implement school choice; a conundrum indeed.
