Danielle Renee Sherman
ProQuest LLC, D.M.F.T. Dissertation, Hope International University
Believe-Empathy-Wellness-Empower-Listen-Learn (BE WELL) program offers a promising replacement for traditional punitive suspensions in California schools. Amidst the over 6 million suspensions reported in 2022, this on-campus program fosters self-reflection, academic growth, and life skills within a compassionate and accepting learning environment, aligning with transformative learning theory. BE WELL seeks to instill resilience and empathy in students, diverging from the detriments of traditional suspension, such as isolation and loss of academic and mental health support. The program emphasizes the benefits of alternative disciplinary methods, demonstrating improved interpersonal skills, emotional regulation, and patience in students. The study delves into qualitative content analysis, recruiting highly qualified California administrators experienced in discipline to provide insights on the BE WELL manual and program efficacy, ensuring participant anonymity and unbiased data interpretation. Findings reveal positive outcomes identifying the strategic design and thoroughly developed with mindful considerations for the program's success. BE WELL emerges as a transformative method, nurturing trust and empathy, which has profound implications for personal growth and educational achievement. This comprehensive approach represents a potential shift in disciplinary practices, aiming to reduce the reliance on punitive measures significantly.
