School Counselors' Career Counseling with Latinx High School Students to Satisfy the Georgia Bridge Law Mandates

In response to the changing job market, the Georgia state legislature passed the BRIDGE law in 2010, mandating school counselors provide career exploration activities for Grades six through 12 to ensure that all students are college and career ready. The Latinx population is entering the workforce at a faster rate than any other group yet lack the necessary skills and education for high-skilled, high-wage careers. It is, therefore, vital that Latinx students receive equitable career counseling and advisement resources at the secondary school level. This study used a quantitative research method to investigate how high school counselors in Georgia provide career counseling to Latinx students and their incorporation of career theories and social justice principles. The results of the study found that most school counselors use career assessment programs based on district directives, do not offer adaptations to their career counseling activities, do not incorporate career theories, and have not recently received professional development in career counseling for Latinx students. This study, therefore, suggests a need for additional professional development for school counselors in multicultural career counseling and changes to the BRIDGE law to offer culturally appropriate alternatives for Latinx students.
