Examines the impact of the aptitude treatment interaction (ATI) between cognitive style and study method on mathematical achievement of disadvantaged students. The findings are thought to suggest that individualized study methods should be investigated further as viable aids for disadvantaged elementary students. (MP)

Field-independent students scored better than field-dependent students on items of high structural importance to the meaning of the passage. A method of study which is inefficient but used by large numbers of students taking courses in mathematics is described. The wide relevance of the problem, for subjects other than mathematics, is also examined. (MP)

A Western Carolina experiment examined what kinds of data could be obtained from students that could (1) help make physical facility planning more objective and factual and (2) determine what the academic or learning consequences of these decisions might be. The effect of cheat-sheets on later test performance was investigated. Results indicated poorer test performance when a cheat-sheet was made and not used, compared to when it was made and used, not made, or made with the awareness that it could not be used during testing. (Author/MH)

The validity of the Study Practices Inventory (SPI) for a group of entering pharmacy students was assessed. The four subscores of the SPI showed moderate correlation with entering grade point average and with measures of reading ability. (Author/JKS)

Differences in study skills were examined in college seniors majoring in elementary (N=146) and in secondary education (N=115). Results found that their overall levels of study skills were similar, but that the groups had different approaches to studying. (SM)

Examines the use of computerized quizzes in a life span human development class that included 29 sophomores and juniors. States that students who use the quizzes as a way to learn the materials, as opposed to using the strategy of prepare-gather feedback-restudy, would not be as successful. (CMK)
