Conti-Ramsden, Gina; Durkin, Kevin – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2007
Background: Research has consistently documented a relationship between phonological short-term memory skills (STM) and specific language impairment (SLI). This study reports on the development of phonological STM abilities over 3 years in 80 young adolescents with a history of SLI, investigating the nature of the relationship between phonological…

Justice, Elaine M.; Powell, Melanie A. – 1982
Developmental changes in preschool children's awareness of the relative effectiveness of four nonverbal strategies in a memory-for-location task were investigated. Fifty-two preschool children (12 three-year-olds, 20 four-year-olds, and 20 five-year-olds) made paired comparison judgments as to the mnemonic effectiveness of marking, touching,…

Pigge, Fred L.; And Others – Elementary School Journal, 1978
In a study comparing differences between 1967-69 data and 1975-77 results, mathematical understandings of teachers, regardless of subject preferences, were found to have increased. The finding that teachers who preferred not to teach mathematics had less mathematical understanding was replicated. (RH)

Dawson, Geraldine; Fernald, Margaret – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1987
The relationship between perspective taking ability and quality of social behavior was investigated with 16 autistic children ranging in age from 6 to 14 years. Results indicated perspective taking ability correlated significantly with two measures of social skills whereas receptive vocabulary and nonverbal intelligence did not. (Author/DB)

Schiff, William – Child Development, 1983
Children 3.5 to 5.5 years of age who were unable to conserve length with Piaget's classical task did conserve length with parallel nonverbal tasks. Findings suggest that "preoperational" children apparently do not fail to conserve length because of centration, misleading perceptual information, or immature cognitive operations regarding…

Rixecker, H.; Hartje, W. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Administered Kimura's Recurring-Figures-Test to 427 normal subjects from Germany. A Kuder-Richardson test reliability was obtained. T-scale norms are given for two subgroups of different educational levels. Results indicated that the RFT is a valid instrument for the assessment of nonverbal memory function, and has a high test reliability. (Author)

Dolin, Danielle J.; Booth-Butterfield, Melanie – Communication Quarterly, 1993
Collects and categorizes nonverbal comforting responses of college students to a hypothetical scenario. Assesses the relationship of use of emotions to comforting. Notes that males reported fewer comforting strategies and less diverse comforting responses than did females, and that comforting strategy use was positively correlated with affective…

McArthur, G. M.; Bishop, D. V. M. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2004
The reliability and validity of a frequency discrimination (FD) task were tested in 16 people with specific language impairment (SLI) and 16 people with normal spoken language (controls). The FD thresholds of the 2 groups indicated that FD thresholds for 25-ms and 250-ms tones were remarkably stable across 18 months. The FD thresholds were lower…

Yagmurlu, B.; Berument, S.K.; Celimli, S. – Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology: An International Lifespan Journal, 2005
To investigate the role of early context in theory of mind development, institutionalized children living in a boarding home (n = 34) in Turkey were compared to home-reared children coming from low (n = 32) and middle socioeconomic backgrounds (n = 44). Alloway, Tracy Packiam; Gathercole, Susan E.; Willis, Catherine; Adams, Anne-Marie – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2004
The aim of this study was to investigate the functional organisation of working memory and related cognitive abilities in young children. A sample of 633 children aged between 4 and 6 years were tested on measures of verbal short-term memory, complex memory span, sentence repetition, phonological awareness, and nonverbal ability. The measurement…

Krivitski, Erin C.; McIntosh, David E.; Rothlisberg, Barbara; Finch, Holmes – Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, 2004
This study was conducted to determine whether children who are deaf perform similarly to hearing children on the Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test (UNIT; Bracken & McCallum, 1998). The children classified as deaf demonstrated a hearing loss of 60 dB or more, were prelingually deaf, and did not exhibit co-morbidity. They were matched on…

Farrant, Brad M.; Fletcher, Janet; Maybery, Murray T. – Child Development, 2006
Recent research has found that the acquisition of theory of mind (ToM) is delayed in children with specific language impairment (SLI). The present study used a battery of ToM and visual perspective taking (VPT) tasks to investigate whether the delayed acquisition of ToM in children with SLI is associated with delayed VPT development. Harris'…
