Electronic sports (Esports) is a fast-growing competition that has increased modern sports families' market value and size worldwide. It has become a popular competitive gaming and intramural activity in American university campuses. However, what are the perceptual differences toward Esports among university students in America? Therefore, this study explored potential untapped perceptual differences toward Esports among American university students. A total of 590 eligible university students from the East Coast of America voluntarily participated in and completed the survey using a validated and reliable instrument. MANOVAs, ANOVAs, and post-hoc Scheffe tests were utilized to test for significant perceptual differences toward Esports. The results revealed that Recognition was the lowest-scoring factor, and Socialization was the highest among the five perceptual factors toward Esports. The findings indicate significant dependencies between male and female students and between Esports players and non-players across Attraction, Economics, Socialization, Recognition, and Technicity. Significant dependencies were also found in the subgroups of gender, playing status, and years played on the negative factor of Constraints. This study provides valuable research data for educators, higher education leaders, and policymakers to understand the positive aspects of Esports and recognize the potential challenges of Esports dynamics.
