Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory profiles of Post-traumatic Stress Syndrome outpatients (N=30) and newly admitted random psychiatric inpatient veterans (N=30) were found to be practically identical and were consistent with diagnosis of schizophrenia, indicating the severity of delayed response to stress in Vietnam veterans. Research on risk factors for schizophrenia is reviewed with emphasis on children of schizophrenic parents. Four areas of biobehavioral functioning that have been examined in high-risk research are discussed. The author extends the self stimulatory theory of self destructive behavior in autistic, schizophrenic, and mentally retarded individuals to suggest that damage of the skin's nerve structure lowers the tactile sensory threshold for physical input and enables individuals to obtain sensory stimulation by repeatedly depressing the damaged area. Examined opinions of normal subjects (N=120) and patients diagnosed as manic and schizophrenic (N=150) regarding Ellis's 11 irrational beliefs. Follow-up of 10 schizophrenic children admitted to a child psychiatric unit revealed that outcome was related to such factors as age of onset, and clinical subtype. Deterioration following the active phase of the illness occurred in only four cases, indicating that the outcome may be more favorable than generally assumed. (Author)
