Fortier, Gilles E.; And Others – Computers, Reading and Language Arts, 1983
Cites needs of reading and language arts professionals that can be met with the help of a computer and describes "The Storage and Retrieval of Bibliographic References." (FL)
Descriptors: Information Retrieval, Information Storage, Microcomputers, Reading Consultants
Schuegraf, E. J. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The design of programs to search large document data bases is discussed with regard to the use of compression coding combined with adoption of word fragments as the basic language elements. An algorithm is described for determination of a set of almost equifrequent fragments. Its efficiency is tested. (23 references) (Author)

La Hood, Charles G., Jr. – College and Research Libraries, 1973
Microfilming has been used at the Library of Congress to solve the need for storage space; to preserve newspapers and rare and fragile documents; to produce copies for outside orders; to conserve copyright records; and to acquire new materials for the library collections. (Author/SJ)

Kuney, J. H. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
The need for increased use of microfilm in primary publications is discussed. The microfilm editions of the American Chemical Society journals are now being used for supplementary material of restricted interest. Details of this arrangement and experience to date are presented. (4 references) (Author)

And Others; Yammoto, Takeo – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
Conversion of the Chemical Abstract Service scientific literature data base from Standard Distribution Format to a center-oriented file format, STF, is described. A tape file format is described in which variable length logical records, possibly longer than the blocksize, may be stored safely. (7 references) (Author/NH)

Arup, Jens; Scott, T. G. – New Univ, 1969
A computer could be used to present test questions at the end of a project to see whether or not students had discovered certain vital points. This information could guide the choice of the next project. (CK)

Liston, David M., Jr.; Schoene, Mary L. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1971
The authors advocate a systematic procedure involving the identification of: fixed parameters, variable options for each variable parameter, factors affecting a choice among available options, factors affected by a choice among available options, and the optimum sequence in which decisions should be made during the design process. Saracevic, Tefko – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1971
The main conclusions are: the human factor appears to be the main variable in all components of an information retrieval system; length of indexes affects performance considerably more than indexing languages; question analysis and search strategies affect performance to a great extent - as much, if not more than indexing.
