This study investigated the hypothesis that low reading achievement may be related to noise interference. Reading scores of children in classrooms near train tracks were lower than scores of children whose classrooms were quieter. It was found that there were differences in students' perception of their schools' environment when schools were classified as either large or small. Large elementary schools seemed to have less influence on students' perception than did small schools. Students in small schools perceived a closer, warmer relationship with their schools.
