Exploring Highly Effective School Leaders: A Qualitative Descriptive Study

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how teachers in schools with a highly effective school climate describe leadership styles and qualities of the schools' leadership. The primary research question guiding this study is: How do teachers in schools with a highly effective school climate describe leadership styles and qualities of the school's leadership? The study was conducted using purposeful sampling taken from 15 random PK-12 grade teachers from The Teacher Circle, an online group of the professional educators located on the social media website LinkedIn. The theoretical foundations were based on an ethnography technique. The researcher utilized Braun and Clarke (2006) six steps cycle to analyze data to analyzed the data retrieved from the interviews. The findings of this study showed participants had positive working environments when working for a highly effective leader, which led to a positive school climate and culture and higher student success. It is perceived by understanding the leadership styles and qualities of a highly effective school leader it can help school authorities understand how specific characteristics of an effective school leader can bring about success in an educational institution.
