Zener, Clarence – Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, 1976
In their preoccupation with highly complex new energy systems, scientists and statesmen may be overlooking the possibilities of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC). That is the view of a Carnegie-Mellon University physicist who is in the forefront of solar sea power investigation. (Author/BT)

McCarthy, Jane E. – Environmental Science and Technology, 1976
An experimental approach now being tried to resolve environmental conflicts is the use of the negotiation-mediation process. The role of the mediator and the nature of the mediation process as applied to environmental disputes are outlined. (BT)

Oppenheimer, Carl H.; Brogden, William B. – BioScience, 1975
Presents a list of recommendations concerning global data collection and sharing which will enable a genuine interdisciplinary and transsectoral analysis of environmental pollutants and their effects in order to influence environmental management. (Experts attending the conference represented 13 countries.) (BR)

Reiquam, Howard; And Others – Environmental Science and Technology, 1975
Using 1000 MW coal-fired central power stations as an example, the impacts upon other media (land, air, water) are analyzed when controls are imposed on one medium. The development of a methodology for assessing the cross-media impact of specific control technologies or strategies is illustrated. (Author/BT)

Environmental Science and Technology, 1975
A conference convened by the American Medical Association in December 1974 heard the latest research findings on the effect of airborne substances on the body's defense mechanisms, hypersensitive reactions to various air pollutants, heart and respiratory diseases and illnesses in children. Air pollution is still a health problem. (BT)

Williams, J. R.; Justus, C. G. – Journal of the Air Pollution Control Association, 1974
The findings of this study indicate cigarette smoking causes more respiratory diseases than does air pollution. The 1970 nationwide health cost of respiratory diseases is estimated at $6.22 billion. The effect of air pollution accounts for between 1 and 5 percent of this total cost while cigarette smoking represents 68 percent. (MLB)

Proshansky, Harold M. – School Review, 1974
Author addressed a central task in the development of an interdisciplinary field of inquiry into manenvironment relations: namely, theory development. He decried the lack of comprehensive theoretical reasoning that has characterized environmental research and suggested directions for expanded conceptual work. (Editor/RK)

Maienthal, E. J.; Becker, D. A. – 1976
This report presents the results of an extensive literature survey undertaken to establish optimum sampling, sample handling and long-term storage techniques for a wide variety of environmental samples to retain sample integrity. The components of interest are trace elements, organics, pesticides, radionuclides and microbiologicals. A bibliography…
