Ligon, Glynn D. – New Directions for Testing and Measurement, 1983
Testing professionals need to work with teaching staff and parents to help students prepare for standardized testing. Year-long preparation involving teachers and parents is a better alternative than teaching test wiseness strategies at the last minute before a standardized test. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Standardized Tests, Student Motivation, Test Coaching

Wilson, Archie S. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
High test scores may measure general intelligence or test taking "savvy" rather than acquisition of knowledge of a particular subject. Pretests may help instructors differentiate between material students already know and good performance based on flaws in the wording of tests as indicated by pretests administered to college chemistry…
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education, Pretests Posttests

Kubistant, Tom – Education, 1981
Applies the basic principle of performance to taking tests, poses some alternative views of test performance, and provides some general guidelines that will facilitate improved test-taking. (Author/CM)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Performance Factors, Student Attitudes, Test Anxiety

Whitely, Susan E. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1979
A model which gives maximum likelihood estimates of measurement error within the context of a simplex model for practice effects is presented. The appropriateness of the model is tested for five traits, and error estimates are compared to the classical formula estimates. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Error of Measurement, Error Patterns, Higher Education, Mathematical Models

Chandler, Theodore A.; Spies, Carl J. – Teaching of Psychology, 1981
This study tests the hypothesis that student attributions of the causes of success on their examinations (ability, extra help, and extra effort) depends upon the test type (objective, problems, or essay). Findings supported the hypothesis. (AM)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Attribution Theory, Expectation, Higher Education
Markel, Geraldine – Academic Therapy, 1981
A multicomponent model to improve test taking skills of learning disabled (LD) adolescents is proposed to encourage anxiety management, problem solving skills, assertiveness, study skills, and student confidence and control. The role of the LD consultant in this process is described. (CL)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Anxiety, Assertiveness, Learning Disabilities

Sarnacki, Randolph E. – Review of Educational Research, 1979
The taxonomy of test wiseness constructed by Millman and others is discussed. Other aspects of test wiseness are reviewed, such as additional influencing factors, manifestations, theoretical approaches, correlates, measures, and methods of minimizing its effects. (MH)
Descriptors: Classification, Cognitive Tests, Literature Reviews, Performance Factors

McGee, Mark G. – Journal of Psychology, 1978
Finds support for the hypothesis that individuals who prefer a visualization strategy will obtain higher scores on the "Mental Rotation Test" than individuals who prefer an orientation strategy. (RL)
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Higher Education, Individual Differences, Problem Solving

Van Overwalle, Frank – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1989
Four samples of university freshmen (N=859) rated the influence of 10 possible factors on exam performance. A subset sample (n=209) assessed 10 factors along 3 of the 4 dimensions identified in the first study. Results indicate that the dimensions of locus, stability, control, and globality constitute major causal attributions. (TJH)
Descriptors: Attribution Theory, College Freshmen, Factor Structure, Higher Education

Stanton, Harry E. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1988
The literature on the use of hypnosis in an educational setting is briefly reviewed, and a hypnotic approach involving the use of the clenched fist as a conditioned trigger to improve examination performance is described. A study of 60 high school students indicates that the approach can improve test outcomes. (TJH)
Descriptors: High School Students, Hypnosis, Response Style (Tests), Secondary Education

Callan, Roger John – Clearing House, 1995
Cites research to support the notion that the time of day in which the SAT is administered has a significant adverse impact on many students taking the test. Suggests that changes in testing procedures (making tests available via computer at any time of the day or year) will serve students. (RS)
Descriptors: High Schools, Higher Education, Literature Reviews, Test Format
Hughes, Charles A.; And Others – Diagnostique, 1991
One hundred seventh and tenth grade tests across several content areas were examined for the presence of six types of test-wiseness cues. Approximately 75 percent of teacher-made and publisher-provided tests contained one or more cued items. The most frequent type of cue was length of option, followed by specific determiners. (Author/JDD)
Descriptors: Cues, Incidence, Secondary Education, Teacher Made Tests

Williams, Janice E. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1994
Assessed multitrait-multimethod validity of 2 anxiety traits (worry and emotionality) as measured by test and mathematics anxiety instruments among 175 junior and senior high school students. Findings revealed that the four subscales apparently measured a single construct. Also, all four subscales were pervasively influenced by quantitative…
Descriptors: Anxiety, Construct Validity, Mathematics Anxiety, Performance
Bakunas, Boris – Learning, 1993
Most students suffer some test anxiety. A two-pronged approach to holding students' test anxiety at bay suggests that teachers keep testing low-key to minimize fear and that students learn a systematic study method so they will be prepared. Some children may need professional help to conquer their fears. (SM)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, School Counseling, Student Attitudes, Study Skills

Geiger, Marshall A. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1997
Relationships between multiple-choice test answer changing and testwiseness skills, and between these two variables and examination performance were studied with 150 college business students. Answer-changing behavior was related to multiple-choice test performance but not to testwiseness or performance on the nonmultiple choice portion.…
