McClelland, Jane – Annals of Dyslexia, 1989
This biographical article about Anna Gillingham describes her holistic technique for teaching children with specific language disabilities to read, using a sequential, graphemic-phonemic multisensory program. The dedication she exhibited in training teachers to use her remedial techniques is also explored. (JDD)
Descriptors: Biographies, Elementary Secondary Education, Holistic Approach, Language Handicaps
Gates, Rosemary L. – Freshman English News, 1989
Summarizes linguistic research on the sound, shape, and meaning of phrases, and describes several classroom procedures for helping students become aware of the phonological rules underlying spoken English and incorporate that knowledge in developing a written voice. (MM)
Descriptors: Definitions, Higher Education, Language Rhythm, Linguistic Theory

Blanchard, Jay; Logan, John – Reading Psychology, 1988
Tests the statement in "Becoming a Nation of Readers" that kindergartners can name an average of 14 letters. Finds that a more realistic distribution is bi-modal in that most kindergartners know 8 or fewer letters, and only a few can name more than 20 letters. (RS)

Goyen, Judith D. – Reading Teacher, 1989
Compares the phonetically regular orthography of Spanish with the phonetic inconsistencies of English. Reports on the role of phonics in six popular Spanish reading programs. Notes that the regularity of the Spanish language is compatible with the use of systematic phonics for reading instruction. (MM)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, English, Foreign Countries, Native Language Instruction
Lenhardtova, Lydia – IRAL, 1993
Discusses phonological errors and their causes in the language performance of beginning to advanced Slovak grammar school students learning English as a foreign language under conditions suggested by G. Nickel (1989). Errors in perception, production, and perception/production are shown to be of different quality and distribution; interferential…

Vernon, Sofia, A. – Journal of Research in Childhood Education, 1993
Compared the early literacy development of English-speaking preschoolers and kindergartners to that of Spanish-speaking children. Subjects wrote at least six words and one sentence, then interpreted their own productions. Found that syllabic writings in English-speaking children were like those of Spanish speakers; found differences in how…

Grossen, Bonnie; Carnine, Douglas – Teaching Exceptional Children, 1993
This article applies research findings to the teaching of phonics, and outlines four instructional steps: (1) introduce letter-sound correspondence in isolation, (2) teach students to blend sounds to read words, (3) provide immediate feedback on oral reading errors, and (4) provide extensive practice. (JDD)

Reutzel, D. Ray – Childhood Education, 1992
Most early childhood teachers support breaking away from the letter-a-week method of teaching the alphabet but question how to achieve that goal. Concepts related to how young children learn the alphabetic principle are reviewed and successful strategies for teaching the principle are presented. (LB)
Descriptors: Alphabets, Classroom Techniques, Grade 1, Kindergarten

Moffett, James; Wagner, Betty Jane – Language Arts, 1993
Argues that literacy teachers should take letter play seriously in conjunction with invented spelling to help their students learn how letters and sounds relate. (RS)

Lindamood, Patricia C.; And Others – Annals of Dyslexia, 1992
This paper argues that the ability to rapidly compare phonemes is a primary sensory-cognitive function underlying self-correction in word recognition and spelling and thus, indirectly, reading comprehension. Such phonological defects can be addressed both preventively and remedially using procedures that are fundamentally different from typical…

Haskell, Dorothy W.; And Others – Remedial and Special Education (RASE), 1992
This study compared the effectiveness of reading instruction at the onset-rime level, phoneme level, and whole word level with 48 first graders. Both phoneme and onset-rime groups were significantly more accurate than whole word groups, and there was a tendency for the onset-rime group to outperform all other groups. (Author/DB)

Bowey, Judith A.; And Others – Child Development, 1992
Second and fourth graders were assessed as skilled or less skilled in reading ability. Less skilled fourth graders performed worse than skilled second and fourth graders in recognizing the odd phoneme in a group of phonemes and performed similarly to skilled second graders on a test of verbal working memory. (BC)

Goodell, Elizabeth W.; Studdert-Kennedy, Michael – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1993
This study examined whether toddlers build a repertoire of words as integral sequences of gestures and then differentiate these sequences into their gestural and segmental components. Results demonstrate clear differences in duration and coordination of gestures between children and adults and a shift toward the patterns of adult speakers during…

Watson, Betty U.; Miller, Theodore K. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1993
This study of 94 college undergraduates, including 24 with a reading disability, found that speech perception was strongly related to 3 of 4 phonological variables, including short-term and long-term auditory memory and phoneme segmentation, which were in turn strongly related to reading. Nonverbal temporal processing was not related to any…

Chela-Flores, Bertha – IRAL, 1994
The inability to focus on the rhythmic pattern as a whole is one of the main deficiencies in the teaching of English rhythm, and it is partly responsible for syllabic rhythm in the speech of learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). A technique is proposed that isolates the segmental phones and sequences so that EFL learners recognize them.…
