Classroom Management Training among Non-Tenured Teachers and Its Effect on Student Misbehavior

It was not known if, and to what extent classroom management training is related to the number of student misbehavior incidents. The purpose of this comparative and correlative study was to examine if, and to what extent differences exist between student disciplinary issues in classrooms with non-tenured teachers that completed classroom management training and those who did not, and to examine if there exists a linear relationship between classroom management training of new teachers and the incidence of student disciplinary actions within Title IX Elementary schools in the US. This study was based on choice theory that all behaviors are choices and are driven by needs. Choice theory has not been studied in relation to student disciplinary incidents, hence this study. Data on classroom management training of non-tenured teachers (independent variable) and the incidence of student disciplinary actions (dependent variable) were obtained for 763 schools through national archival data. Because the dataset did not contain student disciplinary incidents for classrooms of non-tenured teachers, a proxy variable was used. The results showed that there were no significant differences in disciplinary incidents between schools with a high proportion of non-tenured teachers and schools with a low proportion, using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique. The F-statistic was 1.926 and the p-value was 0.166. A linear regression analysis of the incidence of student disciplinary action against the proportion of teacher with classroom management training indicated a significant relationship, with a F-statistic of 13.74 and a p-value less than 0.001. This study is significant because it will provide information that may lead to the improvement of training programs aimed at reducing disciplinary incidents in schools.
