The SUGAR Program Manual: A Guide to Build Resilience in Bullied Adolescents
Tiona Imari Sykes
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
The SUGAR Program Manual was designed based on an extensive literature review on bullying, adolescent development, resilience and protective factors, and anti-bullying programs. Literature on anti-bullying programs showed a deficit for older adolescents, particularly high school students. A whole-school approach is proposed by incorporating resilience theory, cognitive theories (cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy), and Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory to address the problem of bullying. The proposed program was evaluated on the potential usefulness for the targeted population. Criteria to participate as a reviewer for this study included being a caregiver to a high school student in Southern California or being a school faculty member currently employed by a high school in Southern California. A total of seven reviewers were given either the SUGAR Caregiver Guide or the SUGAR Whole School Guide and each reviewer completed a semi-structured interview. The data was analyzed using qualitative coding and thematic analysis to determine if reviewer responses connected to the two research questions. From the data analysis, there were four themes that connected to research question 1 (program strengths): (1) fostering resilient teens through protective factors, (2) bullying content and materials, (3) opportunities for self-reflection, (4) collaborative training program for school and caregivers. From the data analysis, there were three themes that connected to research question 2 (program recommendations): (1) expanding bullying and resilience definitions, (2) implementation of program, and (3) program design suggestions. The findings of this study can be significant for high school caregivers, school faculty, and students. Future recommendations can integrate reviewer suggestions for expanding definitions, providing adaptation strategies for modules and activities, and integrating additional multi-cultural components within future variations of the SUGAR Program Manual.
