Yohman, J. Robert; Parsons, Oscar A. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Examined verbal learning/memory in 60 male alcoholics. Results indicated that the predicted relative impairment of alcoholics with more difficult material did not occur, nor did the groups' learning curves differ, suggesting that rote associative learning either remains intact or recovers satisfactorily with abstinence. (Author/BL)
Descriptors: Adults, Alcoholism, Cognitive Processes, Males

Caliguri, Joseph P. – Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education, 1986
Seeks to redefine the issues in alcohol prevention. Finds that current concepts do not address all of the problems in preventing alcoholism. Recommends that theories, models, and research studies developed on the holistic health model be encouraged. (ABB)
Descriptors: Alcoholism, Holistic Approach, Intervention, Prevention

Gurnack, Anne M. – Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education, 1986
Summarizes a study of Wisconsin's drunk driving law and evaluates the mandated alcohol assessment for convicted offenders. Findings indicated individuals operating while intoxicated remain young, male, unmarried, with high school educations. A substantial number of these persons were assessed with serious drinking problems. The strongest predictor…
Descriptors: Alcoholism, Demography, Individual Characteristics, Intervention

Kanas, Nick – Journal of Drug Education, 1984
Suggests that pathological denial in alcoholics may be a reaction to stress from past traumatic events, the sequelae of alcoholism, or even the treatment process itself. A case is presented that illustrates this conceptualization, and relevant treatment nuances are discussed. (Author/JAC)
Descriptors: Alcoholism, Case Studies, Drug Rehabilitation, Stress Variables
Schall, Jane – Instructor, 1986
This article describes the ways in which children cope with an alcoholic parent, gives clues to identify these children, and offers ways to help them understand alcoholism and improve their self-concept. Books and other resources are listed. (MT)
Descriptors: Alcoholism, Coping, Elementary Education, Parents

Cernovsky, Zdenek – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Examined the impact of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) Ego Strength (Es) level on the relationship between posttreatment alcohol use and MMPI scores in 54 treated alcoholics. Results showed that for the low Es group, the more intensive the alcohol use, the higher the MMPI scores. (JAC)
Descriptors: Adults, Alcoholism, Drinking, Personality Measures

Kola, Lenore A.; And Others – Gerontologist, 1984
Surveyed 88 aging agencies serving approximately 11,000 clients to assess their capabilities for serving elderly with alcohol problems. Alcoholism was not viewed as a major problem by agency administrators, but few policies and procedures for dealing with this population were extant. Discussed implications for policy and program development.…

Watson, Charles G.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Performed factor analyses of 100 alcoholics' reports of the effects that they experience after alcohol consumption. Five factors emerged: Hangover, Euphoria, Flushing, Seizures, and Sleepiness. These factors may be helpful in assessing theories on the etiology of alcoholism and in studies of ethanol's effects on subsets of alcohol abusers. (BH)
Descriptors: Adults, Alcoholism, Drinking, Factor Analysis

Scaturo, Douglas J.; LeSure, Kenneth B. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Assessed the relationship of self-reported symptoms of psychopathology to self-reported alcohol abuse. Participants (N=72) completed a questionnaire. Findings identified several psychopathological areas related to alcohol abuse: social skill deficits, anxiety, addiction proneness, impulse discontrol, and self-destructive ideation. These results…

Ludenia, Krista; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Examined pre- and posttreatment scores on the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y) for 107 veterans in an alcoholic treatment program. Significant differences between pre- and posttreatment scores suggested that the STAI (Form Y) is appropriate for assessing changes in anxiety with alcoholic patients. (JAC)
Descriptors: Alcoholism, Anxiety, Drug Rehabilitation, Evaluation Methods
Holzman, Ian R. – Journal of Children in Contemporary Society, 1982
At least 30 percent of newborn children of alcoholic mothers are affected severely by the fetal alcohol syndrome and 40-45 percent show some stigmata. Risks to offspring of mothers who drink occasionally or binge drink are not clear, but the danger is probably greatest in the first trimester of pregnancy. (CMG)
Descriptors: Alcoholism, Drinking, Infants, Mothers

Donham, Greg W.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Cross-validated findings of Ludenia, et al. (1984) from two independent but similar samples of alcoholic inpatients (N=219) with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) Form Y. Results indicated that the STAI (Form Y) is a stable instrument across time when used to assess anxiety in an alcoholic population. (LLL)
Descriptors: Alcoholism, Anxiety, Patients, Personality Assessment

Holmes, Cooper B.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Replied to Hays and Stacy's critique of an article by Holmes, Dungan and McLaughlin in which the validity of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory alcoholism scales was questioned. Presents support for the original conclusions and comments on Hays and Stacy's reanalysis. (JAC)
Descriptors: Alcoholism, Statistical Analysis, Test Interpretation, Test Validity

Pfost, Karen S.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Investigated the relationship of the MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale (MAC) to personality type and level of emotional distress using Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scores of 38 alcoholic males. No relationship was found between the MAC and magnitude of psychological distress, as measured by T scores. (JAC)
Descriptors: Alcoholism, Males, Patients, Personality Traits

Sherer, Mark; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Attempted to replicate previous research which demonstrated that psychological test results of newly admitted alcoholics are not stable due to lingering alcohol toxicity. The present study (N=40) demonstrated that a 10-day delay in testing is sufficient to obtain stable results on some psychological tests. (Author/JAC)
