Behaviors of Leaders Who Inspire Volunteerism
Amy Hasan Braswell
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
The volunteer workforce is the backbone of any nonprofit organization. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, however, even though many people have returned to work, leisure, and volunteering, there are others that have not, leaving many volunteer positions empty. As organizations return to the basics of recruiting, leading, and retaining the volunteer community, it is important to reflect upon, examine, and implement practices that encourage volunteers to engage in service. This mixed method research sought to better understand the behaviors that inspire volunteerism in non-profit organizations. Quantitative data was collected from 155 participants who completed online surveys. These individuals had served as volunteers in Raleigh, North Carolina non-profit organizations. Over the past twelve months. Of those that participated, sixteen participated in the qualitative portion of the study by participating in focus groups taking place after the electronic survey had been completed. Key findings for the study included the observation that leadership qualities influencing individuals to begin volunteering were 1) communication of the need 2) kindled desire to help others, 3) voiced value in the mission of the organization. Concerning leadership behaviors demonstrated, most important to the volunteers surveyed were behaviors that include 1) leaders that provided support, while standing back 2) leaders that lead by example, and 3) those that demonstrated authentic leadership. These characteristics were also important in creating a positive work culture. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
